Default Yet another squirrel chasing question - why do they chase when alone in the yard?

I have a serious high drive female dog that has an endless passion for chasing squirrels. We live on an acre lot with serveral mature pecan trees. There is no grass around them now and a nice track around the yard Honest she is driving me nuts and I realize there is not much I can do to control the problem. I work her, walk her, got her a great male friend, nothing. My question is; Will she teach this obsession to the male dog? He very low drive and seems to take interest in it but backs off while she continues. I have an OCD dog! She seems to never stop moving. Very hyper and driven. Well she ever calm with age or continue until she no longer can? Is there something natural that I can give her to help her?

Yup, there is.

EXERCISE and training. Have you looked into herding classes? Agility? Tracking? Obedience? Agility? Flyball? Schutzhund?

I've found spending time WITH my dogs not leaving them to entertain themselves, is key to most of their good behavior. So I go to dog classes. I take them hiking for miles. And they are such good dogs!

Well I am a stay at home mom and I do spend alot of time with my dogs. I suppose I could try hiking on some trails we have here With having such a large yard I do most training here but know that they love getting out for walks. As for leaving them in the yard are you saying never leave them in the yard? Sorry but I think that's weird thing to say. I understand that this breed needs to be stimulated and challenged. But I don't think is an unreasonable thing to expect of them.

I have almost two acres, half of it wooded and my pup is almost never out there alone. Maybe for 20 minutes a couple times a day. Mostly first thing in the morning (because I need COFFEE) and a bit in the afternoon.

Otherwise, he is with me in the house or in the car or out training/exercising. I think your girl sounds like she needs a job--!
