So, I got an 8 year old Malinois a few days back. She's very well trained and socialized (ex-K9). In general she's benign, just a lovely little gal. However if I get too friendly with my 8 year old male GSD she gets jumpy and tries her damnedest to mount him. He's not into that, guess he likes his spot on the totem pole. Now if I get too friendly with the Mal, the GSD stands back and does that half growl/bark thing thing that essentially means "pay attention to ME!". They play fine, tolerate each other during meal times (just no noses in each others bowl) and aside from being jealous little jerks do great together.
Any ideas on how to help the pack sort itself out in a way that I can give as much attention to either dog I see fit? It's been awhile since I've had two dogs, it's been even longer since I had two that were vying for top slot when it comes to my attention. The last time was a GSD and a GSDxBC, and the mix was uncontested top dog, it was effortless for her as the GSD didn't care as long as he was near me, that same GSD is now very tightly bonded to me....extremely tightly bonded. Not a separation anxiety kinda bond but a more MY owner, MY rubs, MY time...etc kind of bond. I do not want to deprive my GSD of the attention and love he is used to while at the same time I do not want to deprive the Mal of the time and attention she deserves. Gah, having two high-intensity dogs is thrilling and nerve-wracking at the same time.Right now I'm thinking that wearing them out with play is going to be the best answer.
