Forgive me if this has been addresed before --I am on my home computer which is 10 years old and 100 years slow!!so looking this up in the archives is a tedious event! Anytime I, or anyone, tries to pet Sib she puts her mouth on our hands--does not bite --but for my 87 year old dad--each time is a new bruise..and frankly this embarresses me..I don't know how to stop it--I have had Sibi for one year on the 26th and have not found a solution yet..She was 2 years old in Nov and is a sweet, good gsd--but this issue to me is a big one--I took her to my work this pm and everyone there she did this to..Anyone have any ideas on how to stop this bad behavior? I love my Sibi but I hate this habit...Pre thanks and Merry Christmas to ya'll
Jan

So she kind of holds your hand with her mouth? Softly but enough, like you said, to bruise older skin - sweet (and yeah, you don't want adult protective there!) and glad that your dad is with you.
I teach an alternate behavior - something like give kisses, so they kiss the hand instead, or touch - where they touch with their nose instead of mouth on. Or you can give her something to carry instead - toy, ball, my girl likes to carry a stainless dog bowl (ha!) so she has something to do with her mouth. Teach these things positively so she gets something good for trying this new behavior - a toy, praise, petting, treat whatever. A leave it command may also work. Also a good one to train positively. I have a foster puppy (11 months) right now and she likes to use her mouth like hands too. I am lucky to have a dog who can help me show her some good bite inhibition that I can't do - but I am doing the kissy kiss, touch, and AH! noises to get her to think about what she's doing. Hopefully someone else will see this - and also you will let us know if any of these sound like they may work so more detail can be given, or links.

Molly came to us really mouthy. The only thing we have found that works is to ignore her when she starts doing it, and tell her 'no bite'. I've also recognized when she is more likely to start mouthing and I try to redirect her. I'll give her a toy to hold and that usually does the best to curb it. I am hoping that she will someday just grab a toy when she gets the urge to be mouthy.
