Default Poop

Our 10 month old GSD continues to eat his poop. He can barely be out back with out a leash because he tries to sneak a bite.

We've taken him to the Vet. He's perfectly healthy... tried stuff that you put in his food from the vet and also tried putting V8 juice (I've heard that helps) to make his poop undesirable. Nothings worked so far and we need help.

Any suggestions???

What are you feeding him? Have you tried changing his diet? Often times if they are eating it, it is because its not digested very well. Change to a higher quality food that digests more fully and it may help.

This comes up pretty frequently. The only sure fire method is IMMEDIATE clean up. It's a pain in the butt, but better than having them eat it. My old dog just started doing this. I think it is because she has had accidents and feels the need to clean up after herself. She goes out to potty on the leash now. Always.

When pups (and kittens!) are born, they cannot control their bodily functions and mom stimulates them to urinate and defecate...she cleans it up when they start doing it on their own as well....pups learn from mom to "clean up" by eating poop....disgusting! YES .... but you have to beat him to it and clean up as soon as he goes and eventually he will stop.

Lots of dogs go through a stage of eating their poop, some grow out of it and some don't. One thing that will help is to watch when he goes if you can and pick it up instantly. I am pretty sure there is a thread on here that deals with this problem, there may be something in it that will help you. Good luck, hopefully he will grow out of it soon.

If he is thus far healthy, then I would start by breaking the habit. So that means going out with him EVERY time and picking up the poop as soon as it hits the ground.

When did he come to live with you (age?)? and has he done this from the very beginning?

There are many causes of this but if he is parasite free (has this been checked?) and is getting his nutrional needs met (what is he eating?), then I would chalk it up to habit. Start with breaking the habit and go from there...

Step 1. Always go out for potties on leash
Step 2. Always pick up the poop immediately

Problem solved.

We feed him Purina Puppy chow... Considering to start feeding him Nutro Natural choice.

Haven't tried the pineapple... Does that really work??

I suppose picking up the poop every time he drops works... but occasionally its left out there... It's very nasty that he does this.. He has done this since we got him at 9 weeks old. its a very HARD habit to break...
