I have been noticing for some time now and, even my wife will make comments but my girl Misia is like velcro to me. I have raised her since she was a puppy. She is very well trained, it's been a lot of work and love. I really did get lucky with her she has a perfect temperament. I receive comments all the time on her temperament and how much of a sweet heart she is. The reason I preface with this is because, she is not mentally weak. Her prey drive is amazing, and when she herd's she is fabulous. What I am wondering is could, she be too loyal or dependent on me to the point were it may be unhealthy ? She will stay in the room while am sleeping, if I sleep in late she will not leave the room to eat breakfast. I have been recently pretty sick, the doctor gave me some medicaine that just knocked me out. I was sleeping for 11 - 12 hours and Misia would not leave my side...even for raw chicken necks and backs. When I have to go away on business trips she will grab pieces of my clothing and bring it into her crate. She really is stuck to my hip. She doesnt guard me or is she aggressive when my attention is elsewhere. It's funny because with no doubt she is the last thing I see before I go to bed and the first thing I see when I wake up.

welcome to having a GSD. They're referred to as velcro dogs for a reason. She is extremely bonded to you. Now if it was seperation anxiety, it could be destructive. It does sound like she may have some seperation anxiety with stealing your clothes when you're gone but i dont think its serious. Live it. Love it. She picked you as her person.

This sounds like a very bright dog -- can this be genetic obedience !! What is her pedigree please.
Lucky you . here are some famous loyal dogs Grey Friars Bobby , a terrier in late Victorian Scotland who lay on his masters grave for 14 years . The village fed him and cared for him and errected a statue which now supports a Pub . He has been written about and even had a movie back in the 80's? Probably a lot of embellishment , nonetheless his loyalty was celebrated. Just this Fri while driving there was a bit of banter on a phone in radio program (1010 John Moore) and they were talking about Japanese dog Hachiko who is also subject of a '80 s movie , starring Richard Gere . Look at this clip -- we would be blessed if we had friends like this Video: Loyal dog leads rescuers to mate in Japan - Telegraph |

My Kaos is very similiar. Now if my husband is home he gives me some space, will sleep in his own bed and seems more at ease. If my husband is out of town or working late he is so close, that if I turn direction I run into him
Also when my husband is gone, he refuses to sleep in his own bed and comes upstairs to my bedroom to sleep next to my side of the bed. I don't see it as a problem, it is rather endearing. However, he can not be boarded because he shuts down and refuses to eat...we had to return early from a trip once when K went 3 days without food. If we do have to go out of town and he stays home with either my husband or a neighbor, he will usually skip one day of meals before eating. So that is never fun....

Our dogs should be so lucky for us to be half as loyal to them as they are to us.

My former GSD used to do all the things you described. I didn't consider her too loyal at all. I considered to be an example of what real loyalty is all about--standing by me no matter what. This is behavior I have noticed with a lot of East German and Czech bred GSD's also, especially the females. And you are totally right, that it has nothing to do with mental weakness. It has to do with a unique type of love that has no equal.

Yes ! CaliBoy . I don't see anxiety , even with the sitting at the window waiting. This is a trait that the old farm dogs had , fitting in learning the rhythm of the day by osmosis , recognizing patterns . This is loyalty .
I think you are very lucky . |

My little Anja is as you describe. She is always close by, and she watches me intently, as though she is always checking to see that I am OK. I am the only person in her universe - no-one else matters, not even DH: he is a family member, but that's about it. She won't walk with anyone else, or even allow them to put on a leash unless I'm there too. While her devotion is awesome and touching, I must admit that it is cause for concern - if anything should happen to me, I don't know what she would do really.
If you go to the Current Dog Affairs section you will see a video clip I posted of a little Chinese dog that won't leave his/her master's grave. Not saying that our dogs would do that, but it is the kind of loyalty we are talking about. __________________________________________ Susan Anja SchH3 GSD Conor GSD Blue BH WH T1 GSD - waiting at the Bridge
