I appreciate the "image" my GSD portrays but this has never been tested with a bad encounter or such...Don't know what she will or will not do but I feel it's my job to protect her first and then she can make her own decisions from there..However, ya'll have had your GSD for a lot longer than I have..Any stories?

Yes.
When I was 15 or 16 I was walking home sometime in the winter (it had gotten dark and cold very quickly on my walk home) so I decided to take a short cut . I had my first GSD with me, and he was quietly walking behind me. This shortcut was secluded and not directly lit, and most of it was basically RR tracks. It was not an unusual shortcut, and an easy way to go to different housing tracts. As we were walking, I noticed something white down the way. As we got closer, it moved and I realized it was the pants from a person. They had suddenly gotten up, and this person (who I could now tell was a man, with a very serious look on his face) was coming straight towards me. I froze. As the guy approached, my dog came out from standing directly behind me and made an AWFUL noise and lunged at him. The guy was about 12 feet away, and he suddenly veered to the right and kept going. I kept walking home, and my dog walked next to me, and never took his eyes off the guy...he walked the rest of the way home with his head turned back. Good boy! ![]() ****Please note that pepper spray, a baton, etc, education in self defense, and knowledge not to get stuck in bad situations (like this one) are more important than a dog. I didn't want my little story here to concinvce anyone that a loveable pet is going to go all PPD on anyone. |

When I was teenager, My friend and I were tanning at pool in an apartment complex behind my home. I had my family GSD with me. She hated water and was sleeping under a small picnic area. I jumped into the pool to cool off, when a man jumped into the pool from a second story balcony.
He grabbed me, held me under the water. While I struggled he attempted to remove my bathing suit bottom. Suddenly I was being dragged to the surface by my 90lb friend. She was screaming my dog's name. My GSD had jumped into the water with my friend and bit the man in the face. We grabbed the dog and ran for home. Worried that my dog would be reported (for bitting the guy in the face)we didn't tell my parents. Last we saw was him holding his face, covered in blood, screaming. My current GSD and I were sitting my bedroom and I was eating a snack. It went down my windpipe and I started to choke. I was bent over in a computer chair (on rollers) attempting to breath. He could have thought it was some sort of game, but for what ever reason he jumped on me knocking me backwards, off the chair and flat on my back. Hondo landed on top of me. I suppose it was just enough force to get me to coughing and getting in air.

Just out of curiosity did Hondo the snatch up the discarded snack? It could be his actions had less to do with heroism than hunger. ![]() jelpy

my neighbor was burning wood for his
grill and my dog went crazy. he started pacing all over the house. when i smelled the wood burning i thought a house was on fire near by. i let my dog out and runs to my neighbors house and starts sniffing around his car and then his house. my dog runs to my neighbors back gate and sits down. i go over and open the gate. my dog runs into the yard and goes to the back of the house. i follow him. when my dog reaches the the back of the house he sits. i run down there and there is my neighbor surrounded by smoke from the wood he's burning for his grill. my GF was choking once and our dog ran to her and sat in front of her and gave her the GSD stare.

I was out walking my dog when a car full of guys pulled up to the curb next to me and the guy in the passenger side of the car opened the car door and said, "You got money lady?" My GSD lunged at him growling and the guy jumped back in the car and they drove away so fast that their tires squealed. There have been many robberies in my area lately, so I am sure that I would have been a victim if my GSD hadn't reacted.
Anther time when Brutus was still a puppy- bee's built a nest near our house. I was sitting outside on a lawn chair and all of a sudden my dog started walking toward me with an intent stare on his face, then he quickly grabbed something off of my shirt with his mouth and threw it on the ground. I looked down and he had taken a bee off my shirt that I didn't even know was there and thrown it to the floor. Even though my GSD has a very strong will and at times has a bad temper, he is a good boy at heart.

I was around 16 years old or so. My sister and I were staying with our dad at that time. We had our GSD, Mossey with us too. Wherever we went she went (between mom & dad's house). Anyways, it was a snowy morning. There was no school. My dad had been cooking bacon. When, someone came to the door needing help to get their car out of the snow. My dad went to help them forgetting he left the burner on with the pan of bacon grease on it. I remember semi-waking up smelling smoke and finding it kinda hard to breath. I also remember hearing Mossey whining and jumping on and off my bed trying to wake me up. But, I couldn't wake myself up. Next thing I know my sister is screaming for me to get up that our room was full of smoke. Apparently, when Mossey couldn't wake me. She went to my sister's bed and somehow woke her up. Anyway, I jumped out of bed and ran to the kitchen. Thankfully it hadn't caught on fire. I grabbed the pan and threw it outside in the snow. It had gotten so hot that it melted the wallpaper off the wall and melted the side of the microwave. I remember throwing the backdoor open and black smoke was just rolling out of the house. We didn't have smoke detectors at the time. So, if it hadn't of been for her I'm sure the end result would been very different.

I've never been in a situation where I could see if Ellie Mae would do anything (thank God) but from the looks of it, I doubt she would do anything. I like to think her natural instinct would to protect me, but she gets scared of the shih tzu that lives in my building

We had just moved to St Louis from Wisconsin, my husband was out of town. My two year old had just gotten one of those ride on toys for the back yard. The battery has to charge for 18 hrs before they could ride it. Well of course that makes no sense to a 2 yr old, he wants to ride it NOW!! So about 3 in the morning Kaos was barking at my side of the bed, biting my hand, putting his front legs on me and making the worst noises I had ever heard. I had never seen him act like that. I got up he kept circling around me as I went to the main level of the house. He just kept herding me towards the door. Then I heard it......my 2 yr old had woke up in the middle of the night went into the garage and was trying to ride his new toy. Evidently a two yr old can unlock a door and a deadbolt when the price is right. Scared the heck out of me...I am so thankful Kaos woke me up, I am a very heavy sleeper and we did not know any of our neighbors it could have been a terrible situation. Needless to say I didn't sleep anymore that night and we had someone come out the next day to install higher locks and alarms. Thank goodness for Kaos

this got me thinking...so sorry for the ramble. Kaos has also come to my rescue in other ways. Before I met my husband I was in a very abusive long term relationship. It ended badly to say the least. I had gotten over a lot of my fear, but still struggled with panic attacks sometimes, over active imagination whenever I heard a noise, etc. So once I got married and my husband traveled, it was hard on me. He gave me Kaos as our first Anniversary present. I know having him here has allowed my mind to rest and in 9 yrs I can only think of 1 or 2 panic attacks that I've had compared to almost weekly before. Both times Kaos came to me and just sat and licked my hand, until it was passed. So he has been a huge benefit to me in a lot of ways. Sorry for the sappy ramble....it's very out of character, that big dog just brings it out in me
