After we pts our 18yr old cat last week, I was really suprised when my husband said "we can get another cat". Silly me jumped on the opportunity before he changed his mind. So saturday we went to the pound and got this really friendly little kitty about 4 months old.
I decided it would be best for him to be crated until I felt he can be safe with the dogs, just one swoop with a paw could hurt him. The crate is big enough that my 115lb dog can fit comfortably and of course I can let him out when I can. All 3 of the dogs as puppies were raised with cats. Well the dogs don't seem to be on the same page as me with the new kitty. My 9yr old male,Apache is on the fence he doesn't fixate on the kitty but he's not crazy about fast action. I think he will be the easiest to work on. My 7-1/2 yr old female, Kiya, wants to eat kitty and Lakota almost 2 seems think that's not a bad idea. Of course the first day/night was crazy, hubby was getting angry yelling at the dogs, but I have begun to "manage" the dogs in a more appropriate manor. Rotation so I am only dealing with 1 at a time. And lots of liver brownies. I've tried to convince my husband that yelling at the dogs isn't going to help, it will make it worse. Last night wasn't too bad. I kept Kiya on leash, she's the instigator. Everyone was laying down nicely in the livingroom. I just felt bad poor kitty had to stay in the crate. Hubby understands it is going to take time, I think it maybe longer than he'd like.

Good luck! We had our cat first before we got our pup. At 1.5yrs old, Dax is still chasing the cat. We are lucky that he doesn't want to eat the cat, just lick him, but it may take longer than you expect to get your dogs to stop, especially if they have a strong prey drive. The only way I can get Dax to stop chasing is by yelling at him, other methods didn't really work.
If your dogs are showing that they may hurt the cat, I would probably never be at the point where I would trust to leave them alone (even if they start acting better). Make sure your cat has an area it can go to where the dogs can't go so the kitty won't be stressed all the time. |

We have another cat, Misty, she's about 11. She's on the same side as the dogs with this. All she's doing is hissing at the kitten, wants no part of him. I think the only reason she may like the kitty is that now there is someone else to pester.
Believe me it will be a long time before I trust anyone, even Misty.
