I have a two year old GSD. He had never growled at anyone in our house. However, we brought home a new female GS puppy that is now 6 months old and she has been with us since she was 2 months old. A few days ago the 2 year old GSD started growling at me when I pet him and the female is around. Is this normal? and what is the best way to correct this behavior? Neither are spayed/nuttered.
Thanks! |

Simple, tell him to stop. He is vying for dominance re: the female. Don't let it continue.
Are you going to breed them? She could into season at any time. Last edited by PaddyD; 10-24-2011 at 09:17 PM. |

i second this question. If he's growling when she comes around and you're petting him, thats resource guarding. You being the resource and her being the one trying to take it from him. DO NOT ALLOW THIS!!! Discourage his behavior. Something to try is when you're petting him and she's in the area, keep his focus. Give him treats. If she gets closer and he starts growling the treats are removed. He needs to learn good things happen when she's around, good things being the treats. If she comes around when you're petting him and he begins to growl, immediately stop petting him. By stopping the attention you are telling him his negative behavior gets him negative consequences. Cause and effect.

How about a sharp "NO" to the male if he growls at you ever? You can't allow him to continue to decide to growl at you (or at the puppy for that matter).
One question before you try anything - are you afraid of him? And what will you do if he reacts even more strongly if you try to inturupt his behavior? Might need to see a pro trainer/behaviorist (one who has a success record with this type of behavior) to let them see his behavior and then they should be able to better advise you what approach to use. |
