I noticed a few minutes ago, while Wolfie was outside, him hiding behind a tree and peeking out. I looked and there were 2 wild turkeys in the yard. I noticed that when Wolfie is tied out on his trolley run and a large animal comes in the yard, he will hide and check them out before going to investigate. I don't think that it is fear. When he is at the beach, on walks, at the dog park, or even in our other yard that is fenced, he doesn't hide. It only happens when he is on the run. I am wondering why he does this. Is it possible that he feels vulnerable because he only has a limited area that he can move in?

What kind of "large animal?" I'd hide too if I were tied and a big animal came into my yard...

LOL Well not lions tigers and bears. I mean other large dogs, lots of deer, and the turkeys. There are coyotes and I have seen them at the edge of the woods, but haven't seen them in the yard. Mostly the deer and large dogs.

I suppose it could be because he feels he has limited mobility, lacks the ability to flee if he feels the need to.
Or, (depending on his demeanor at the time) he is involved in his own type of 'stalking'. A game played with the animal in the yard, only they don't realize it. With Wolfie, it's just too hard to tell he is such a card!

You have Wolfie tied out and loose dogs can approach him? Aren't you worried?

No, I'm not worried. It's only on a rare occasion that someone's pet dog gets loose. Maybe 2 or 3 times a year. We have very strict leash laws. Plus I am constantly watching him out the windows and his run is about 20 feet from the back door. I can get to him quickly if need be.

When you go on hikes in the woods you might notice that your dog will frequently go off to the side in the trees and watch you then come running back out. Over and over and over. It's the stalking game. |
