Default Face it, nobody is perfect-in what area does your dog need more training?

In a perfect world, everyone and everything would be perfect…..welcome to planet earth, where nobody is perfect. This may be news to some people, but it's true. So now that we got that settled here is the question, in what area does your Name: dog_german_shepherd_dog.gif
Views: 279
Size: 11.6 KB need more training, or what are you currently working with your dog on?

Right now, my main (but not my only) focus with my GSD is on getting him to stop chasing cars. I tried a correction with the prong for far longer than I am willing to admit, and it got me no where. My new training technique is working wonders, and it is redirection with something that he can't resist-dried duck. It's all about the timing too, the timing has to be exact or the car wins, but this training is finally showing great results.

I am still training my lab to be less dog aggressive. I have been working on this with him for a year now, he is progressing but not quite there yet. Other than the dog aggression, my lab is a very well behaved dog.

With regard to perfection, my dog's behavior is perfect in all areas but one. She is a little dog shy but overcomes it once she determines the dog is not aggressive. Since I am a lackadaisical trainer I can't expect any more from her than I get .... and I get more than I ask for, usually. Like most GSDs she is a quick learner and remembers well, so it is totally up to me to get off my a$$ and do some training that leads to a specific goal.

Kopper's obedience is good, but his manners are terrible. When he's "on" he's on! And he's an agility superstar in the making. But, when left to his own devices he likes to make trouble, kinda like a 13-year old boy. We need to work more on his focus and ignoring other dogs. He just can't understand why we can't have doggie playtime at agility class when he's not doing anything else. I get his focus, do some obedience, but the minute I want to listen to the instructor or watch somebody else run, he's back to trying to play with his neighbor. He barks, he whines, he rolls over on his back, he paws at the air. . . . you get the idea. I'll get his focus back, he'll be good for a few minutes, then he's back to being Mr. Social.

Rocky. . . . I'm not really working on improving him at all. He's not perfect but he's 9 1/2. He kinda gets a senior citizen pass.

For Bella I'm gunna say her socialization she is FA but doing better. But since we rarely have company its hard to give her the interaction she needs other than from me and DH, she's also not great with strange large adult dogs but is fine with pups and most smaller dogs. She HATES bostons my aunts attacked her on her first day home. And when they visit there son the dog comes and trys to fight Bella thru the fence if she's out side. If she ever makes contact again I have a feeling it won't end well for the lil Boston. But slowly with time she gets better but still needs a lot of work. Any one wanna come for a visit and help with her socialization ill even cook hotdogs on the grill

Default Flaws

Rough collie, Jessie, 6, is very well-bred, smart, with a fine sense of humor, great watchdog, loves cats and puppies, but she is absolutely stubborn as a rock when I ask her to go outside when she doesn't want to (As in it rained two hours ago, I'll get my feet wet.) . I have to leash her up and make her go out. This has gone on for 5 years. I don't think it'll change. She was a year old when I got her and already set in some ways.

Aussie mix, Merry, 6, is a sweet girl in all ways but has never stopped using anything hard for a bathroom surface (crate/hardwood floor/sidewalk). She is a quick-learning sweetie and I think she learned in the few days she was in the back of the vet clinic in a concrete-floor run that hard was where you went. I can see her point, but ...

Patty the yellow dog, 3, is an obedient girl without any formal obedience training. Point-and-say and she'll do it. She hates the new puppy, Jenny, because Jenny won't mind her. But then sometimes Patty instigates a chase and away they go and at the end Patty tries to eat Jenny's face off.

We won't talk about Jenny yet. She's 5 months old. She does everything she can to irritate everybody, but in a most charming way.

Hot dogs and socialization in Oklahoma with 11 cats and a turtle sounds like a fine time to me. Gasoline to get there would be prohibitive.

Recall. It seems like he'll be doing so well and then the next day it's like he's gone deaf.

Also he's learning that he cannot be a bully when he meets other dogs. (He's got pretty bad doggie social skills.)

Recall and down or sit with STAY. She is good as long as she can see me. We are working on it though- she seems to be coming along great since I started taking her to dog park and working her outside the fence. I think FOCUS will always be an issue
