Default Odd Jobs Shepherds Take on for Themselves...

Anyone else have a GSD that can inadvertently embarrass you like this?

Our Ella is certain her job is "potty monitor". She will (very quietly, BTW) open bathroom doors. She believes you shouldn't be alone when nature calls. She also inspects the tub after you've bathed or will pop her head in while you're mid-shower. After one too many "sneaky bathroom inspections", guests have had to be warned about her opening doors. : )

LOL We have a Boston girl that does that. Even guests, she'll barge in to make sure everything's okay in there...

Have one. She doesn't quietly open the door though. She charges through making sure anyone in the other room gets a full view.

She's just making sure we don't slide out the window without her.

Luckily the 'odd job' that my Alex decided to take on for herself is sort of like babysitter/hall monitor. When we are out in public where there is more than one dog congregating, she will make sure that when there are fights or squabbles, she can find a way to squeeze her body in-between the two causing trouble. When we are near puppies, she makes sure nobody hurts or upsets the puppy.

Funny story:

I fostered a little mix puppy for about a week that came to me through my vet. Little thing had a BAD heart murmur and the pound was going to have to put it down, so my vet took it. Thing was, they didn't have anyone to care for her until they found her a home, so naturally I volunteered. I was happy to see that Alex took to her immediately, and was very gentle when she played with her. One afternoon I let Elsa (the Doberman Pinscher I care for) out into the living room, as she is always gentle with the chihuahua and I wanted to see her reaction to a puppy. Puppy wanted to play, Elsa didn't, and Elsa growled at the puppy when it bounded toward her. Alex ruffled her hackles and ran over toward Elsa, puffing up and blocking Elsa from the pup. Too cute. Poor Elsa, she was just trying to get back to her room before the 'evil puppy' could get her.

Havoc is watching Felony, the pit bull. This a.m. he woke my husband because Fel needed out. Fel can open the door, it just takes her a bit. After my husband left for work, Havoc whined by the bed until I came downstairs and discovered Felony eating my pants because I forgot and left training treats in them.

Fel had a stroke a couple of weeks ago which my husband and I assumed was related to her fainting spells. Yesterday Fel fainted on her walk with Havoc. My husband now thinks that the faints and stroke are unrelated. In any case, it's good that Havs seems to be keeping an eye on her.
