Default ...and now its official....

Zira is almost through her first week of being in heat....

So... I thought I was lucky.. everything was going as good as this can go. She was doing great! The bleeding is definitely no fun, and the "I don't hear you" attitude is obnoxious! However... I didn't have the slutty behavior.. no butts in anyone's face, no mounting, none of the play biting (trying to instigate)........ Until tonight.

I brought her over to a friends since I didn't want her to be trapped in her kennel (I feel guilty doing that to her, especially since my friends is her second home). So I diapered her up and brought her over with me. My friend's dog is neutered and hates her with a passion.... so I didn't see this as a problem. She was fine while we were there for the most part.... right before I leave, though, I see her starting to do the typical female 'butt bump' and then there goes her 'lady parts' in his face. She didn't do it anymore after that, so I thought we were ok.

I get home... relax a bit... Zira comes running up to me... butt bumps me and then starts backing up into me and wouldn't stop. Then she continues over to our family's ancient 2 golden retrievers... and does the same to them! After annoying the heck out of them for like 20 minutes she FINALLY lays down.....

UGH! Super! Now she's gone into slutty dog mode! Oh how I can't wait to get her fixed!!!!! I guess it's time to stay inside for a little while..... no more outings for a while.... I still walk her every night, for both our sanity... but no more 'second home' for a bit.

Also, I have a question: She seems uncomfortable... and I am sure this is not fun for her either. But, she gets up a lot when laying down and whines. Now, she is a HUGE baby (like most shepherds), and cries over EVERYTHING! I just wanted to ask.... Should I be worried about the constant discomfort, or is it just the typical heat cycle taking it's course (and her just being a big baby)? She's also not eating much... though, I read that dogs in heat will lose some of their appetite.... is this true? It's been a while since I've been through this, just want to make sure she's normal.

She is also really bad in her kennel lately. We keep her out with a diaper on most of the day... she is only in there at night, and maybe 2-4 hrs during the day (and that's not all at once). This is pretty much the same schedule as when things are normal around here. Zira is usually pretty good in the kennel... never really complains.. just goes in and goes to sleep. I've noticed lately, she's been REALLY noisy in there. She whines a lot for the first 20mins or so... and she protests. She hasn't done this in a while.... honestly, it's driving me a bit nutty.

I think these hormones are driving us all crazy! It's making all the animals here grumpy, and she's driving us humans up the wall since she doesn't want to listen. Oh... and the race around the house to get the diaper on is just loads of fun.... It's like a funny farm here lately.... Our sanity is at risk! lol!

......few more weeks... and then never again...... I just keep telling myself that!

Haha! I can imagine that wouldn't get too far!

Zira (54lbs so far) was 'butt bumping' a small cocker spaniel... lol! The poor little guy already dislikes her... and now she not only stole all his toys but was also pushing him around with her butt in his face.... Not very lady like...

We ended up just putting Pebbles in a x-pen during that time but she is a lot smaller, maybe 10lb? Good luck...this too shall pass!

Totally normal...she is not in pain or discomfort....just isnt sure what she is feeling at this point....my bitch is 5 yrs old and intact, in the house her entire life. My choice to leave her intact, so I deal with it. It is only every 8 months and only for 28 days. Not that much time when you look at the whole picture. It will benefit her growth to leave her intact until she is done growing. I actually like that she is extra lovey dovey and cuddly. She also has never done the 'in your face' thing with her butt.

Thanks! I knew she was probably just being a big baby. I don't remember my golden ever complaining when she went into heat.... just really hyper and pushy with the other dogs, and she would mount everything. So, it concerned me a little when Zira was crying this much. Everything else seems to be going pretty normal from what I can remember back when I had my golden.

Zira is "in your face" during this... but, not affectionate or loving in any way.... just annoying! lol!

Oh man, I remember the slutty behavior with Halo! We've waited until after the first heat to spay her and our two prior females, but this was the first time we'd had two dogs at the same time, and one of them male. Keefer had been neutered for a long time but that didn't stop them for a second. She was constantly shoving her butt in his face and he'd obligingly climb on and hump her. It seemed like I was telling him to get off her every 3 seconds! So glad we only had to go through that once.

Yeh my neutered males, even one neutered prior to sexual maturity were all trying to oblige Pebbles when she was doing her thing. What a mess. I hope to never have to live through that again. But having the rescue we do get in girls in heat from time to time...our vet will even do "in heat spays" if it's early, because they know how tough it is to have to iso a girl for those three weeks!

Luckly, the two males here have NO interest in her. They dislike her so much, they even ignore their instincts to mount her! With my last female golden, they used to mount her ALL the time when she'd stick her butt in their face... we'd have to tell them to get off her 24/7. They are neutered and have been since they were 10 months old... they are 11 years old now. They ignore her existence...

This is definitely no fun at all, and I just keep telling myself... this is the LAST time I will EVER go through this!!! She will be spayed once the vet gives the "ok", and after this..... ALL males! And this time, I am sticking to that!!! Lol, She really is driving me insane!
