Hello,
I am new here and have read some of the posts here, but am not sure if any of them have answered my questions about my German Shephard. Immo (my GS) is about 4 years of age, and male. He is a very Dominate male. I have two small grandchildren. He does very well with my children ages 12-18 (who are still at home). My oldest son (22) has 2 small babies, ages just under 3 and a 1yr old. Immo does fine with the 3 yr old. However, with the baby he tries to nip at him and if I am holding him he jumps on me and wants me to put the baby down. Once I do put him down, Immo will run around him (herd him) and then will nip at him. Once the baby fell down and Immo nipped him in the face. He has nipped at him several times. Now when the baby is over and in the back yard, I have to put Immo in his dog run. The baby then likes to go over the gate and look at him, but Immo tries to nip at his little fingers while he is holding on to the gate. I am reading that nipping and herding are natural for GS to do; However, it makes me nervous that he will hurt him. Any suggestions? |

Nipping and herding is not 'natural' to all GSDs. My 2 year old intact male never nips. Never has. Some puppies do when they are still babies. The only herding he does is cut in front of me when I'm walking down the hall. But I think he does that to trip me up.

Keep him away from the baby!
This is when all the Obedience classes and training come to play. Just calmly use your 'go lay down' or 'place' command to have your dog go stay in their dog bed/crate when they aren't acting calm around the kids.
