I recently moved into a very nice neighborhood where most people are scared of big dogs, well just my luck my GSD chewed a whole through the fence and escaped. I was at work and my step daughter said she heard a woman screaming and she opened the door then called my dogs name and he came back...
Not sure what really happened but he's been chewing on the fence non-stop so far. I sprayed with no-chew spray. he's Plays 24/7 and my wife and kids are at home. He's inside and out. I'm considering giving him away for the fact it's a high liability and risk if this happens again and nobody is home. Let me know your thoughts on what I should do? |

I think this is the easy way out. JMO.
Can you beef up the containment system. In ground fence systems work quite well with shepherds. Is he people aggressive? Why do you feel he is a liability? My boys (husky and gsd) hopped the fence (chainlink)into our neighbors backyard and waltz right into her house bc the door was open, she is DEATHLY afraid of bigs dogs, needless to say she put a stockade fence up. They are harmless and just wanted to say hi, but she almost crapped her pants.

If you described everything bad that happened in your OP, and that caused you to want to give him up, then you definitely should give him up to a rescue organization, IMHO.

My thoughts on what you should do is not drop the ball of responsibility you agreed to hold when you got your dog. With people at home and a fence, a little bit of vigilance and fence improvement can go a long way. Upping exercise and mental stimulation in the form of training and activities would help with the fence chewing.

"My current dog digs when left in the yard for too long and sometimes chew the fence. I'm assuming this is boredom, but not sure. If left indoor for long period of times, he's fine and will sit there and relax all day."
This is a quote from one of your previous posts. He is happy and therefore well behaved inside--so what exactly is the problem?

What kind of fence do you currently have? if your HOA is strict then it is a nice looking fence. I have lived in HOA development and strict ones don't allow anything but the white vinyl fences or black iron fences. Either way you should fix it. Why do you feel the dog is a liability if you don't think he is people aggressive? This confuses me. If you do not WANT to correct the issues that require YOUR intervention then it is best for you to find a home where they will care for the dog and do what is needed if necessary.
