I adopted Otto from a high kill shelter when he was 6months old. Now, he is about 8months and I've always wondered about one thing.
Ive never seen him poo when we take him out to parks, walks, car rides, etc. I know he doesnt have a constipation problem because I clean up tons of dog poop at home and in our yard. He only likes to poo in the farthest part of our yard. The most I've seen him do on our outdoor adventures is pee; which isnt that bad. I bought this 8pack of portable poopie bags and have never used them. I'm actually enjoying the convinience of this, but is this normal??

Well less clean up for you! He may have been taught not to, or perhaps you time your outings when he does not need to go.
My dogs prefer to go in their own spot too but will go elsewhere, like at the park or on a walk, if they need to. Most dogs will learn to place thier potty in specific places, part of the denning instinct I think. My dogs use one corner of the yard too.

Kira is like this...she really prefers to go in the privacy of her own yard lol. In fact, she did not even like to pee elsewhere which was a problem when we are traveling. She once went 11 hours without going on her a trip to our cabin
She got over that when she figured out that marking her territory is fun

Both my dohs have never pooped or peed on walks and when we are someplace visiting. I guess they only like their own toilet. One time I was visting a friedn at a camp and Bo would not go after drinking tons of water, the minute we came home he ran to the back yard to go in the woods. I actually like it!!!

I had the some concerns about Suki. I say "concern", as we had planned to drive to St. John's, Newfoundland this past summer, and having her hold it for 2 weeks just wasn't an option! She also held her pee for over 11 hours one day when we did a "test drive" up north. We stopped regularly, but she just wasn't going to go. We stopped a final time at a park 5 miles from home, and she finally peed that time!
And one day she pooped on her morning walk - stunned me and DH to no end! Of course she got lots of praise. A week later, same thing. And now she'll go if she needs to, so that drive may happen next year after all.

Some dogs are particular about where they "go". But being scolded for soiling indoors can also leave some dogs shy.
My dogs have their favorite poop spots in the yard. Keeps the poop search to a minimum. |

Lucky you! I have the opposite problem - 2 dogs who, for whatever reason, have decided that in the park or out on a neighborhood walk is the only place they WILL go. So we have a pristine yard, but I have to carry a bazillion bags with me at all times. I have tried to figure out why/how this started, since they both went in the yard originally - I think it goes back to the time when we were doing a lot of construction, and the back yard was essentially torn up. Guess going on piles of dirt wasn't as appealing as going on a nice flat grassy surface.......

I had a GSD who would never go on walks and always waited until back in his yard. When we took a trip, I thought that dog was never going to go!! Some of them have this sensibility about them.

Had a dog we got at Humane Society years ago. We lived on ten acres at the time, she would never go if someone was watching her. She wouldn't go in the good part of the yard. She always headed out about a hundred yards to do her deed. As I have read in this forum and have changed MY ways over the years, I have to wonder if it wasn't because we used the old swat, with a rolled up newspaper method. And she was probably scared of getting spanked when being watched.
