you are probably right, when I was a kid my Bernie was like that, didnt want anyone to watch him...........Ava doesnt go in anyone elses yard but her own, she does on trips, but always holds it for as long as she can. Wish I could say the same for the neighbors dogs........they come into my yard to use it for their purposes all the time, drives poor Ava crazy, I mean how rude is that!

I think you have to be pretty relaxed to go so unless he is totally calm he won't be able to. I personally work to ensure mine will go anywhere since we travel quite a bit. The rule is no going while heeling but when released you should go if needed. If you think you may travel with your dog you may want to work on his being more secure and able to go. I keep them inside and know their timetable so to teach I go somewhere when they really need to go, I go somewhere quiet and not a lot of traffic, then use a long lead and just relax, Eventually they get it and will go.
