Beckley WV- ABANDONED senior GSD,m,b&t, "ROMAN" #0421 (rescue)

Roman was found abandoned in a vacant house and taken to the local shelter by a caring neighbor. He's a senior boy who has some weakness in his back leg(s) and some hair loss (flea allergy?) on his back end. But he's a sweet boy who's pretty spry and anxious to head outdoors for walks. His chances of adoption locally are slim and he needs a caring loving home to enjoy his senior years. He is an intact male, very large head and a pretty stout build and very pleasant. He barked at seeing other dogs, but was fine being next to a female which was also in the waiting area. I don't know about other males but can check. It's sad when senior dogs like Roman are abandonded by their owners. For info contact:

Humane Society of Raleigh County Inc., Beckley, WV- Phone: 304-253-8921 or 304-255-9134(Volunteers can assist with transportation) Please call the shelter at the above phone number or email opundo@operationunderdog.org for questions.

Roman is still in need of help... If anyone has it in their heart to reach out and help this boy please contact the shelter. The shelter had him seen by the vet and xrayed. His hips are good (no HD) so the vet said his rear leg weakness is most likely caused by a nerve problem. . disc damage? or he also suspected he could have DM. No definate disc problem was visible on the xrays he had done, but the vet said additional tests (MRI) would be needed to confirm/find a damaged disc. He has been started on prednisone and also some antibiotics and I offered to temporarily foster him to make sure he gets his meds on time... Maybe it's wishful thinking on my part, but he looks like he has gained a little strength in his hind legs since I first saw him a week and a half ago. The vet estimated he is around 8 yrs old, and he weighed in at 91 lbs. He is the most lovable big boy you could find. He's not been taught much over the years (or cared for) but he has heart full of love to give. I honestly don't think he'd do well with other male dogs, but I haven't tested him since he's on R and R. IF anyone can help him please call the shelter. . .I'm pleading for help for this guy. . . he deserves to have a much better life than where he came from even if for only a few years or less. . .

Just browsing the threads and thought I'd update on this old boys 'happily ever after' ending. Duke, fka "Roman" is living large in a WONDERFUL animal sanctuary in Pa with an assortment of other animals as well as a number of other 'home boys' from WV that he hangs around with.... He has access to great vet care when needed, but in general, he spends his days being carefree and much loved by the folks and volunteers who run the sanctuary. They say he's doing great and gets along wonderfully with all.... https://scontent-a-iad.xx.fbcdn.net/...20772819_n.jpg
