The last time I was at the shelter I don't remember anything especially 'nasty' about it... However, when the general public goes in all you hear is "phew... it stinks" because a dog or two has gone potty in the run. They seem to think it should smell like a bed of roses in there. The shelter has been very short of staff which has been a real problem.
The article makes it sound like they were without a euthanasia tech for a week while the person was on vacation and that Lisa was hoarding animals. Anything but true. They were without a euthanasia tech for at least a month if not longer! They had permission to bring the vet in to euthanize any sick or suffering animals, but the number of dogs and cats built up quickly. Once they had a tech working again they could only put down what they could do in a normal days time. The larger number of dogs reflects moms and pups also... not all adult dogs. The amt of animals dropped off or brought in by animal control is huge...as the article said 60 some in one day.. Lisa did the best she could under the circumstances and followed their rules and county codes. The over population was a result of the inability to euthanize for an extended period of time which wasn't her fault....it was very inhumane for the county commission to come in and say to euthanize ALL of them!!!!!!! Lisa is being interviewed by the local news tonight .. It most likely will show up on WVVA news site tomorrow. If I find the link I'll post it. She's been one of the nicest shelter directors I've worked with and stands strong against cruelty and abuse cases they've dealt with.

This is the same shelter director that helped me adopt/pull my GSD, Max. He was an abuse/neglect case too and she worked very hard to get Max safe, keep him safe during the legal proceedings and then ensure that he got to rescue. Without her, I would not have my beloved boy. Many rural WV shelters are in dire straits. My local shelter has only six runs and some small dog cages in addition to a cat room. It is not uncommon for fifteen or twenty dogs and cats to come in during one business day and it is only open for four hours daily!!!! The shelter director there is also a huge proponent of rescue and this shelter now uses Facebook to get the word out about the animals in need there. In addition, Sandy (shelter director) is a GSD fancier herself and she works tirelessly to get the GSDs, Malinois, Rotties, etc. in to rescues or sound adoptions. The large working breeds hold a special place in her heart.

Lisa is amazing, she changed that shelter and the destiny of dogs there.
I used to pull from there before Lisa came, rescued quite a few nice dogs. And lost quite a few as well. They would never pick up the phone at the shelter. I left messages days before the dog's time was up, emailed too, but they euthanized the dog anyway. I gave up because it was so heartbreaking. Lisa changed all that, it is amazing what a difference one person can make. |
