Perhaps you can post a different post with a descriptive title in the training area(s) asking for local help from someone who might be able to help you for little to no fee. I wish you were closer (I'm in Indianapolis). I'd be happy to help with training. Your dog just needs training. He may or may not even truely be dog aggressive. He may just be very reactive and the lack of training, leadership, and control has caused it to get out of hand.
For starters though, you need to sit your kids down and have a serious talk with them about never EVER attempting to go through a gate or doorway while the dog is loose in the house/yard, unless an adult is right there with them walking through that same gate or doorway. If the kids are too young to understand these rules, they shouldn't be alone in the yard in the first place. If your kids are old enough but can not be TRUSTED not to do this, then a latch needs to be installed too high for them to reach on the gate, or it needs a padlock on it at all times that only the adults in the house have a key to. Dog aggression is NOT the same thing as kid/human aggression. There is absolutely no reason to euthanize this dog for the behavior exhibited. This is like one of your kids getting into a fight at school. This is a parental problem, not a dog problem. This is very easily managed if you will simply step up and take responsibility for your pets training. Last edited by Rerun; 03-15-2010 at 10:08 PM. |

Think the fact you appeared to have given up so quickly to have your dog put to sleep was a bit off putting for most of us. GREAT to hear you are going to try to work with a rescue to rehome your pup and get him to someone with more time and experience. One of the reasons I always go on and on and on with puppy socialization is the situation you are in is VERY COMMON if we aren't able to be proactive from the day our puppies hit the front door. Good luck with finding him a new home. That's the right thing to do.

Did you clearly explain your dog has NO bite history with humans? If you were as vague with your explanation to them as initially with us........it's confusing and appears your dog bites everyone.
I would think biting small dogs would possibly be something they may be able to help with.
