Have you contacted the breeder? In your new puppy post, you were supposed to get a new puppy from that same breeder. At the very least, the breeder should now what personality's are being bred.

In the past year, you have rehomed a german shepherd puppy that was to much for you and now you are going to euthanize Ryder. Maybe you need some professional help with these working dogs or maybe you should not get anymore until you are in a position to get a good trainer.

I hope you find someone that can take him before you take him in to die.

Andrea, give him a chance.

Keep him on lockdown if you must, but he deserves a chance, it won't happen overnight. It's obvious he's not a vicious killer, as you bring in new dogs often.

Get in touch with rescues all over, post on petfinder, here, other GSD forums, other breed working forums. Come now, enough healthy, happy GSDs are killed because they can't be fostered, this dog is already in a home, don't kill him for being true to a working breed. He needs a job and strict training. He sounds 10X better behaved than my Jaeger, who has weak nerves and would be PTS immediately in any other home, but because I can manage him he's not.

I was unaware that the OP has rehomed several dogs that she could not handle. Now I stand by what I said earlier more than ever. She does not need anymore dogs

Ya know i love this forum, and i keep coming back because there is great advice here...however i find it ridicoulos(sp) that not one of you was willing to help (except madonna) until i said i was having him PTS.

I did not make the appointment, and i won't. I just can't do it. He is still a wonderful dog besides with little dogs. He is great with my children. I love him to pieces, I have loved all my dogs, and have kept contact with most. I guess me going thru dog after dog, is because that is the way i grew up. I do have my new gal Sophie, however she did not come from the same breeder, that breeding ended up not taking. I am thinking about keeping him and seeing what i can do with him, if i don't keep him, i will be looking into rescues. But i think we will be finding a place for him...I evidently screwed up when he was little, and i thought i was doing good with him. Guess not. He does need a trainer, which is something i can't do. So go ahead and bash me somemore.

I am sorry. I apologize for being so rude. It was just heartbreaking to hear that you have given up on him and were going to put a good dog down. I'm sorry again for hurting your feelings.

I am glad you are going to try to work with Ryder. Even if you can not afford to go to a trainer there are many thing you can do on your own. My suggestion would be to purchase Aggression in Dogs by Brenda Aloff. It is kind of expensive but worth it. I have used the protocols for my dog-reactive dog and he is doing wonderful. It is tons of work - everyday over and over. You have to always be watching to know what is around so he does not see it first until after he starts understanding the training you are doing. Brenda also does seminars and private lessons. I travel to Michigan yearly to work with her for a few days. You can PM me if I can help you.

Look, I just got done taking J on a very short walk, I have a 4' lead with a sidewalk handle. J is super reactive. So I just avoid dogs... If I have to go to the vet, he's to be muzzled and restrained as he's also human aggressive (I got a winner, eh?).

So, I have a HA/DA-85lbs-of-muscle-dog. I'm 5'3 and I work him alone. I don't have a trainer. If I of all people can do it with J, you can with Ryder, at least until you find him a home.

Is he high-drive? Toy hound? Treats? Prey drive? It sounds to me like he needs a working home, or at least a home that will keep his mind busy and him safe from himself.

Do you have the resources to enroll this dog in professional training for a period of time? There is a facility here that specializes in GSD's that will take him in for a week, a month, however long you can afford and he needs. They then work with you AND him once he has training in place, and teach you how to handle him. If at that point you still feel he is too much, perhaps the professional evaluation and training will assist in placement.
And you were offered advice before you said you were to kill him. Other posted and asked specifics to see how you could fix it. We didn't all ignore you and tell you how bad an owner you were until you said you were to kill him. We just posted more when you said that because it had gone from you needing to place him, to "He's dying tomorrow."

Also, I grew up with BYBs who trained with physical violence, sold pups to anyone, bred mutts they rescued... It's not a good excuse.

Contact the rescues mentioned. It will not hurt and they might find a home that he would do wonderful in.

Well, I grew up with some less than desirable dog owners... Just saying your past doesn't have to be your present.
