When you go to PetsMarts also take a look at the "real" bones...they are plain or beef flavored and they are approx. $5.99...we buy them for our girls and they are thrilled with them...it's very entertaining for them when we are gone...
don't know if that would cause issues with your two, but our girls do just fine... Judy |

If they were in the same room together, it would cause issues - definitely. (Gunner wouldn't cause the problem. Riley would.) But we always separate them when we aren't home, anyway, so that might be a nice treat for them. Quote:
And we haven't heard anything yet, so apparently he wasn't barking while we were gone. I think we'd have heard from the neighbor by now, if he had been. I'm starting to think that the one trainer was right though and maybe he doesn't have a true, textbook case of separation anxiety. I mean, in almost every way, it seems like he does. But if it was that, I don't think we'd be making progress this quickly.

Well, we went out again Saturday and he was just as good!
![]() There's still a lot of fussing and whining when I'm getting ready to leave, but I'm not terribly concerned about that. I'd like to work on it and get to a point where he's completely calm and quiet, just so he doesn't work himself up to a point where it might progress to barking again. But for now, I'm thrilled with the progress. And we still haven't heard anything, so he must have been quiet Friday and Saturday while we were out. Otherwise, I'm sure I would have heard about it by now. We picked up a bone and some bully sticks for him to work on while I'm out walking Riley. This will be the only time he gets them. I'm hoping he likes them enough to draw the conclusion that my taking his bratty little brother out of the house means really good things for him. But at any rate, it's continued progress, so I'm thrilled!

Awesome!! That's so good to hear...you might also want to ask the neighbor to let her know you're actively working on the barking....maybe something like "Hey! Have you heard Gunner barking while we've been gone the last few days? We've really been working on his barking, I know it can be such a bother, and wanted to see if you've noticed anything?"
One, this will give you feedback and two it will open up communication between you and the neighbor in case he ever has a barky day. Oh, and be carefull with those baked-like bones, they can splinter into sharp pieces...not good for doggy bellies. I'd stick to bully sticks. Congrats!

Such good news. I've been gone a few days and am so excited to hear that gunner is getting better.

Awsome news on Gunner. I have a barking issue with one of mine when he IS crated. Fed in the crate, sleeps in there at night. Leave the house..BARK, BARK, BARK. Neighbor said he barked for 2 hours straight (with a bark collar on, new battery..it works).
I can leave him out and he won't bark, he whines and fusses, but settles down. But I don't trust him out with my other guy since they fought. I'm now trying to crate the other one. I think he settles easier. Had to read your thread to find out what you did. YAY!! For You and Gunner!!!!!! Wooooooooo HOOOOOOOO!!

That is a good idea about talking to the neighbor. I think I'll have mom handle that. She can put on a sweet face and be nice a lot easier than I can. If we had our way of course, we'd have two words for her. I mean, we were at risk of having to give up our GunMan because of her. Being nice to her is a little outside of my capabilities. LOL. We don't want any more problems with her, though, so I'll have mom talk to her. Quote:
I think with Gunner it's been a combination of things. The Clomipramine might be kicking in and helping. I think he's finally starting to feel secure here in the new place and I think that my taking Riley out twenty, thirty times a day has helped him. It seems like his reaction, now, is more like "This again? Yeah, whatever." He's getting so used to it that it seems like he's not really doing the math anymore - it's just routine. It's probably a good idea for you to try crating the other one, if he settles down easier. I wish you luck! And we never leave our two alone together, either. They get along perfectly 99% of time now, but they do play pretty rough. And if Riley accidentally hurts Gunner - steps on a foot, bumps an ear a little too hard, etc., - Gunner tends to get a little snarky. Not that I blame him - I don't. I just don't want it happening when no one is here to supervise.

Thanks for the info about the beef bones. The ones we buy are so strong, I can't see them splintering...but, better to be safe than sorry...
Our girls have had their "bonies" for months and they look just like they did when we bought them... What are bully sticks? I'll have to check them out... I am SO HAPPY that Gunner is being a good boy...you know, GSD's are so smart...he'll figure out that the bully stick is a treat for when he's a good boy...Keep us posted on things...Judy |
