We brought our rescue home in late September - we enrolled in a basic obedience class at a local training facility a couple weeks after Beau came home. In a class of about 10 dogs, we were the only "big" dog. Beau, who was estimated to be about 10 months old when we got him, would spend almost the entire class barking (excited - not agressive), but the trainer and other students preferred that we stayed on the outer perimeter of the group. Needless to say, we didn't learn a whole lot.
Last Sunday, we took our first class with OJ Knighten, the K9 Coach, who is affiliated with the GSD rescue where we got Beau. Every dog in the class (8 total) were GSDs and rescues. Every dog started out the class barking and carrying on and I thought to myself, "here we go again..." But, within the first 15 minutes, OJ was able to get all the OWNERS in control of their dogs - they were quiet, responsive and eager to learn. He explained our role in successful training, and imparted insight into our rescue's temperaments and behaviors that allowed us to really understand how to get them to succeed. I can't wait to go back!!
