My pup Madison is 8 and half weeks old, only picked her up 3 days ago. On the second day I took her to the vet as she started with loose stools - practically liquid and she was occasionally groaning after eating. The vet checked her over and said it was probably down to anxiety - made sense I guess, new home and experiences etc. (also she had just finished a 3 day course of wormer on the day I picked her up)
He gave us some paste to give her to help with her stools. The next day she was booked in for her first vaccs and as she was no worse they went ahead. That night she just couldnt settle at all with hot dry nose and restlessness and groaning at times. The liquid stools vary in substance now but its the groaning she does after shes eaten that really worries me! That can't be good at all, can it? and I think shes figured that out too bcoz she eats only small amounts now as if reluctant. Food is the same the breeder had her on. Madison only gets to be in my back garden just now until immunised so other than my 15 year old yorkie shes not been in contact with any strange dogs. Please help, Im really worried that she's possibly in pain

Yeah explained everything to vet - he's convinced its an anxiety thing and that mixed with the recent course of wormer and the vaccs.... maybe it is just overwhelm on her little system but Im concerned about the groaning after feeds.
Her food is Beta. The breeder has had her on it with no problems since she was 5 weeks. Ive just come off the phone to the breeder and shes saying that the vet is probably right about the overwhelm thing and she gave me suggestions for smaller meals more often. And substituting her morning or evening meal with scrambled egg (made with water) as a lighter option til her system settles down a bit. |

I wouldn't be worried yet. The first week after I had Zeus home he had very loose stools. The vet said the same thing with the shots and what not. But I think a lot of it is stress induced. This should clear up once the pup gets settled in. I wouldn't stress. Did you keep your pup on the same diet or change it? |

find another vet and get a second opinion, she shouldnt be groaning when eating and not eating because she is in pain... the vet shouldnt have vaccinated her knowing she was sick , how many vaccines did she get that day at the vets? was her stool checked for worms at the vet? me personally would not wait another week with an 8 week old pup with diarrhea.

I think, based on your comment, I will monitor her and lighten her meals over the weekend and if no better I will book a vet appt on Monday to be on the safe side. Aire on the side of caution incase Madison is actually in pain. Looking at her just now she is sleeping peacefully, bless her, shes a little beauty

If there is no blood in the stool, no vomiting - good...groaning may be b/c of the wormer - the die-off can overwhelm her little body, and teh vet should not have done vax. while this was going on...watch for head tilt, or stumbling or lethargy - these symptoms are recognized as vax. reaction within 24-48 hrs, but can happen at anytime - her immune system is in a 10 day flux as it tries to deal the virus's and adjuvants....double boil white (2x as much water and cook longer) rice and some chicken and add a little plain pure pumpkin (canned)...add some of the starch water - that will help sooth GI tract. Do not give kibble at this time
IF vomiting or blood in stool is noticed - get her in asap!
