Default Worried About The Amount Of Food

I have an 9 week old German Shepherd/ Lab mix. I am currently weening him off the food I was given when I got him, which was Pedigree. I give him half pedigree and half Blue Buffalo Puppy. As soon as the pedigree is gone I have actually decided that I want to ween him on to Orijen Large Breed. Right now I am giving him 3 cups of food over three meals through out the day. Usually it is 5 hours between meals.

I was wondering if that was too much though? He eats all of his food, I don't force him to finish. I take him on an hour walk every day around 6:30, and we usually also take a half hour walk soon before bed time. And I play with him all through out the day as well. So he gets a lot of exercise.

I was just concerned because I read on here varying amounts of food that is given to puppies at a similar age. He has gained two pounds in the week that I have had him, which seems to be average weight gain for a large puppy. I would love your input!

Thanks!

Give him some time between switching foods. (buffalo puppy to Orijen) let his body adjust slowly. At that age, 2lbs gain sounds fine. I have always waited till my dogs were 16 wks before starting to slowly switch to adult food. Your vet could help with that as well. Hope this helps. He is so darned cute!

Missed this, are you saying you are only feeding three cups a day, or three cups three times a day? Three cups a day is not much for a puppy who is going to be big, but 9 cups is too much. Sorry if I misread that.

3 cups a day of a good quality food for a 9 week old sounds about right, if anything, it might be a bit much.

I am feeding him one cup per meal, and he gets fed three times a day. So three cups total for the day. They aren't heaping cups. And the Orijen is the Large Breed Puppy type. I am not switching him to adult for awhile.
