I know I am probably a worried mom for no reason. My female shepherd will be 2 in October, and she weighs 81 lbs but looks skinny. I'm concerned, is there really anything I should worry about? I am also looking to breed her after she is 2, and will be getting her hips and elbows checked and certified. I want to start showing her since she has very good confirmation. I would appreciate any input, and advice. When will she grow out of her puppy stage?? She really gets into alot of trouble.

I have a 10.5 yr old female GSD. My Golden passed 2 years ago this October and I am ready to find a male GSD puppy to add to our family. I just love the looks of many of the internet breeders selling west Germany lines, but, I am having a hard time grasping the thought of paying 3-4k for those dogs.

My female came from a local breeder dog trainer and she had the parents on site along with AKC and UKC reg. The Sire was from Czech and the Dam from Germany. The breeder called her a working line dog. I paid $850 for her and she came crate trained and would walk up to you and sit down and look up at you. The training came easy and she has been virtually a perfect example of good health and is still to this day very active and well balanced.

If $850 got me that kind of dog, I can't imagine what $3-4k would get me but on most of what I read, paying more does not guarantee a better dog. I am prepped to pay $1500 +/-.

Anyone have suggestions for a TX dog that would serve as a family companion?

Could use some help with a socializing regression!?

Jedda's 7 months old now, and I thought I had gotten her well socialized - I take her everywhere dogs are allowed, she's met tons of people of all...

Jedda's 7 months old now, and I thought I had gotten her well socialized - I take her everywhere dogs are allowed, she's met tons of people of all shapes, sizes and ages, and she goes to doggy day care a couple times a week, has had a really good variety of exposures. We're on our 5th obedience class. We go on various hikes/walks twice a day, and she's been on several road trips with all kinds of new experiences continuously since I brought her home. But, is it (hopefully) normal to have a bit of a regression around this age?

I'm already doing some serious work on meet-n-greets with other dogs, since she's had some fear/reactive behavior, sometimes. Lately, though, she's morphing into this nervous wreck on a walk we go on some mornings. We've been going there since she was 9 weeks old, and nothing negative has ever happened, but she'll get hyper-alert and completely ignore me, and forget all semblance of obedience. Honestly, the only thing around us are trees, birds, and bunnies. And she doesn't look like she's having fun checking out the wildlife, she looks terrified. What on earth is going on? When we get out into more of an open area (the arroyo) and I throw her ball, she's normal again.

I took her back tonight to the adjacent park area for just a relaxed hang out armed with treats. There were a lot more people there than at 6 am, but believe me, nothing out of the ordinary for what we've been around. She was nearly as crazed as when we walk. I know socialization is only beneficial when the dog is enjoying it, but I am afraid to just give in to this nervousness and allow her to be fearful when there's nothing to fear. I am at a total loss, anybody have any suggestions? Thanks!

Quite clueless and frustrated about puppy socialization

I am so clueless about this socializing aspect.

How important is it? And how exactly do I proceed about it? Our puppy is okay about meeting other dogs, but more often than not, other dogs seem to display aggression towards him. So now I get nervous every time we are approaching a dog on our walk.

And even if the dogs are friendly and we make it to the dog park, the play sooner rather than later turns rough and I feel the need to rescue him and get him out. Only even though he whimpers and looks scared and seems to try to bite the dog pushing him down, he wants to keep playing.

Can I just avoid dog parks altogether? and playing with other dogs? Can we just go on walks with friendly dogs?

And how do I train him to ignore a dog on a walk, greet it only I say so, or walk on if I keep walking.

He barks at approaching dogs and gets excited only if I hold him back with the leash.

Someone please tell me what kind of training I would need to do for this. Because the obedience class doesnt help with this for sure.

Roxy got to see the other vet today ( we have a 2 vet office)...this was the female vet and she fell in love with Roxy from the get go too. I had lots of questions for her and she took her time examining and just going over everything with me

#39 lbs and will be 5 months on the 30th of this month. She says that's a good weight and that her frame is just perfect. ...

Roxy went through her line up of obedience commands and she was impressed with that and her age.

we discussed food, bloat, pano, HD etc. She said some of those things you just can't prevent or plan for but said all are things we will keep an eye out for.

she told me to keep doing what I was doing.

It felt good to have all of that talked about and I love our vets.

So my 4 year old shepherd is losing weight again. She's always been pretty thin and her first year was plagued with various medications and many food changes. She's been on a raw diet for over a year and had topped out at 67 lbs, but has started to thin out again. She was on some vitamins but at 80 dollars a month plus another 50 for glucosamine, it was rather expensive. I've had the vet suggest some sort of powder that breaks down the nutrients and enzymes for easier absorption but didn't recommend any brands. I live in Calgary, Alberta and was just wondering if any GSD owners had some suggestions of vitamins or this powder.

She has been tested for EPI, worms, the works. I'm thinking a possible case of IBS. Thanks for any info!
