I would like to attend a few events to see if it's something my and my GSD would enjoy doing but after attempting to contact a guy on a website showing some events, many were very far away (6 hour drive). I guess I'm just curious about the sport, how you get into it, how people like it as a dog owner/handler, etc.

Hey Summer! Weight pulling can be fun.I don't know about the west coast" but on the east coast its catching on. They have different weight classes" some carts on rails" some on wheels. If you want too do it" I would get a pulling harness" get the dog used to it" then get a chain " not too heavy and let him pull it" just to teach form" and learn the pull command. You don't want too start pulling anything heavy until the bones are done growing! When you are ready to train it is just like lifting weights" you work your way up slowly! You probably can find a book on it. You want the dogs nose down when he pulls" good form no head up jerking. Allways make sure he can pull the weight! Even if you have to help a little. Hope this helps. Bill:)

Hi Funny Guy Bill! ;)
Do you think starting at a year old would be okay?
Edit: As far as beginning with introducing the harness and starting very light things?

Haha ! Yes just don't get heavy" work on form and pull command" you could make a sled out of 2+ 4 to pull it alone should not be too heavy! I'm not exactly sure when the bones are done growing" since I am a trainer not a shepherd breeder I would think 16 months not sure! Have fun! P.s. Check out my post my first p.p.d. my Shepherd is built like a tank" that is from swimming and running! Funny guy Bill:D

I did a little competing with IWPA (International Weight Pull Association) years ago and we loved it! I would think somewhere between 18-24 months old before you start adding real weight (maybe someone more experienced can chime in on the age).
Do what Bill said to start. Get the dog used to the harness, and then used to pulling something light weight. Once the dog is older you just slowly add more weight. Make sure the dog is always successful, never push it too far. You want the dog to always think he can pull what is behind him. And teach him to pull steady, no yo-yoing into the harness.
I still train my dogs for it but haven't competed in many years as there are no pulls near me. I really liked it though, every one was really friendly and supportive.

When he's older, what type of harness should I get, brand wise? Where should I buy it? Thank you for the info!!!
