Default Ecollar?

This is a question for those who train their GSDs for things other than simple obedience....

I'm coming from the Retriever world - where using an Ecollar is widely accepted as the most appropriate tool for performance training.

This might be a dumb question, but ....
I don't see alot of talk or references to collar conditioning or other use of an ecollar w/ GSDs. Why? Is it just not common because "doing things at a distance" is not all that common?

Do a search. You'll find tons of previous discussions about e-collars here.

before making some tongue and cheek comment about
GSD's do some research about the GSD breed. when you
do your research you should find you can't compare a retriever
to a German Shepherd.

doggiedad, I don't think he was being negative about the GSD breed...but making the observation that retrievers do work away from their handlers most often.

The trainer I work with weekly has field retrievers and does hunt tests on a regular basis. E collar is a way of life for these teams. She's the one that trained me how to effectively use it for my GSD.

The e collar has done wonders for Stella's charging the property line and barking at neighbor dogs. I find I have to use it less and less. Most times now I just use the vibrate and she stops the unwanted behavior.
I am planning on reading up on how to teach recall with the e collar.
