Hi all,
Does anyone know of any things that I can leave for Storm (nearly 15wks) when I have to leave him alone. At the moment he is left with a stuffed Kong, a bone and a ball but he never seems to touch any of them and spends the whole time crying and howling. He also likes to chew things that he shouldn't be like his bed....cheeky lil monkey

I love that you called him "cheeky"
![]() I personally found that my boy would settle down in his crate when he didn't have any distractions with toys...and just sleep. I'm sure others will have some suggestions, Kong toys are always popular and he already has one of those. |

Have him a bit hungrier when you leave for the day, and stuff the kong with kibble PLUS really yummy stuff like cream cheese or liverwurst or chicken or cheese or....
Plus, I'd really up his exercise when you are home. My pups are much quieter crated when I've worn them out with real off leash exercise and socialization. The more time I can spend OUT of the home on those activities, the quieter my pups are when we hit the house.

Thanx for the replies,
I will defo try the leaving him hungrier when I go out as he is very food motivated so that could be a very good one to try with him. Now a few more questions.....sorry to be a pain hee hee 1. how long do you all think is ok for him to be left alone at this age? 2. How much exercise does he need (at the moment he gets a 15-20min lead walk every morning and again in the evening), is this not enough and could this be why he is so still getting so emotional when I leave him? (not tired enough to just go and sleep maybe). Im struggling alot with the seperation anxiety with him...my last shepherd never really suffered from it....Im starting to feel that he will never get over it and it upsets me so much to hear him so distressed Thankyou in advance for any help you can give me Kel |

My 5 month old gets 1 hour before I leave in the morning, and close to one hour when I come home. Usually these are walks with a bit of training and a bit of sitting and staring at new things. Sometimes they have a 10 minute tug session.
With this, she happily hits her crate and is quiet for 5 hours. Their bladders really can't handle much longer, so I'd say 5 is a good safe number before they have any accidents. She's also not calm inside the house when not crated, and requires constant supervision and constant interaction, which is something that I'm working on. If I want her to be more tired/relaxed, I just take her out for a 10 minute tug and come back.

In her crate I usually leave a bone (don't recommend if your pup is a very big chewer), a bad cuz, and a deer antler, and sometimes a soft toy (she doesn't destroy toys, but if yours does, don't leave it in since they can eat the stuffing and get a blockage). But usually, she just sleeps when I'm gone.

Ok thankyou for your reply, I think maybe I need to give him more exercise in the morning before I leave him and let him have a run around off lead for a little while to burn off some of that endless energy he seems to have then.
So far the longest I have left him is around four hours (but felt guilty the whole time I was out in case he was upset) He is usually very calm while I am at home with him and is happy just to follow me about the house...although he tends to have a mad half hour every now and then when he runs around the house like a maniac bless him, he has me laughing so much when he does this because he looks like such a goof ball ha ha Loving every minute of time that I spend with him and watching him develop his own little very "cheeky" personality |

You know, I've never seen the crazy half hour puppy "zoomies". Amaretto is ALWAYS on leash tethered to my waist or to my desk when in the house with me. So she's either settled down chewing something or moving around too much for me to ignore her and do my own thing. So I take her out to play/walk. The only time she goes crazy is right before she needs to potty.

You are quite right as most of the time when im at home all he does is sleep, so is more than likely doing the same while I go out (although he always cries and barks when im leaving). Hearing him like that is what then upsets me and makes me worry that he is upset the whole time im away.
I guess I just have to stay strong with him and not give in to his "pleas" to be let back out. I never let him out while he is wound up like that and make him sit and be quiet first but it pulls on my heartstrings in a big way |

Hi again all,
Just thought I would update you all I took Storm out for a good long walk this morning and let him have a 10 min free run in the field, then when I left I gave him his kong stuffed with the rest of his dry food from the morning and some (tinned) meat, when I was ready to leave I popped him into his safe area and he happily trotted in behind me (usually takes alot of persuasion) and started munching on his kong.... he didn't make a sound when I left and was still quiet laying patiently for me when I got home a few hours later...RESULT Thankyou again for the advise I have got him a treat ball today whilst out so will leaving that with him aswel, so hopefully from now on I will be leaving and returning to a "happy little boy" ;-) |
