Braided/woven leather leads?

Does this make them stronger, or weaker? Is it functional, or just an astetic thing? I got 2 braided obedience tabs, and one is like... shoelace size. I like it as its so light weight that the dog doesn't notice it when I let go, but I'm nervous its gonna snap on me at some point (hasn't so far).

I think that braiding strengthens the leather, it also gives it a little bit of natural stretch.
