Default Has anyone modified their Springer Jogger?

I've always gotten the feeling from mine that the special patented "safety release" would probably not release when I wanted it to and release when I didn't... I have a coupler about the same length made of "real leash pieces", not the cheap plastic clips (they're supposed to be cheap plastic clips)... Has anyone ever relied on the safety release? ...and did it work?

I used a Springer in the early '90s with the first dog I trained for the AD (20km endurance test). I used the release clips because they were there, but I always had a 6' leash on the dog as well so if we ran into a mailbox post and the release broke the dog would not be loose. Never had one break.

I don't use the plastic clip or the quick release. I replaced both with a clip that I can quickly undo if I need to unhook her.

I am thinking about buying one of those rubberized leash attachments. I think that maybe it will give an additional shock absorbing factor.

When I ride with her I make sure that I do not go anywere where she could wrap herself around a pole or a tree.

Is the only reason for the clip that it comes undone if they snag on a pole?
It never occurred to me to go close enough to objects that they might get snagged on, so I guess I don't really need it... I thought it was some other kind of emergency release like if they get grabbed by another dog or something but figured it wouldn't release properly anyway.
