Hey guys!!! So Koda's training is going fine, this is not for her (except when bringing new people into the house, which sparks her protection instinct- we're working on fixing this). My lab recently bit a girl who was jogging while one of my friends was walking him (I know it may not have been good to leave him with someone else, but I was training Dakoda with a couple other dogs in a fenced in area). He did not draw blood, but I am not willing to take any chances. I feel horrible having him locked up in the house, though. He is a great dog, but his aggression towards strangers while on walks worry me.
I need to know what kind of muzzle to get him, and the nearest place to get that kind of muzzle (I also need to know the price). He is a lab mix (a couple pictures attached), about 78 lbs. He was wearing a head-harness when he bit the girl, so that is out of the question. The muzzles I have been looking at are mesh and nylon. However, his walks are between 8 and 10 miles and he would not be able to pant with these. So I have been curious about cage muzzles. I'm not experienced at all with muzzles, so I need someone who knows more about them to help me out. I do feel bad about it, but this is my last option other than keeping him locked up in the house. And that isn't fair at all. So, does anyone have any suggestions on a particular type of muzzle, where to get it, how much it will cost, etc? Also, any tips on how to continue trying to retrain/resocialize him would be nice as well. Thank you all! ![]() ![]()

Get a basket muzzle that he can pant, drink and eat treats with. Get him use to it in short sessions around the home, so he doesn't relate muzzle to company, outings.

People that use muzzles can be careless because you have the safety of the barrier that the muzzle provides . However , if you don't use it correctly and modify the behaviour , catch if from the moment the intention is telegraphed then all you are doing is promoting the very drive or event that you do not want.
Muzzle work is good to build fight drive . |

I don't intend to fully rely on the muzzle, I merely want it to assure that he will not be able to bite if by some chance he is able to get to someone. I am also getting him a new collar that will give me more control over him, and will be reinforcing his leash training. I just want the muzzle because I want to take every measure I can to ensure he will not bite someone again. I would die if I had to put him down. I raised this dog from a bottle and he was fine before I went on a trip when he was a year old and my brother/his friends terrorized him. The muzzle is simply to help me out and allow me to feel more confident about working with him on this problem.
onyx'girl- That sounds perfect! Do you know what their price range usually is?

look on the google search link I posted, many sites/pricing. I wouldn't go too cheap, you want a well made one and I would research it well before you purchase. There are probably links on training the dog to one and properly sizing....Leerburg has an article on it, too.

I would not use any type of muzzle that restricts panting if the dog is going to be doing any exercise with it on or will be wearing it for more than a short amounts of time.
I'd go with a basket muzzle. |

These basket muzzles are in my first aid kit and my dogs are comfortable with them.

The Leerburg basket muzzles look like they'll be good for using. All I need now is to get a sturdy one that's the right size and get to work making him comfortable in it and working with him. Thank you so much everyone!!! I'll update once I get it to let you know how it's working for him. (:
