Default Collar Question

We may be adopting a 2 year old GSD in the next 2 weeks. We already have this collar here and were planning to use it if it is a good choice for everyday. If it isn't a good choice, what is?

Oh and the part that is pulled away in the picture is stretchy. It rests against the regular part of the collar when you aren't pulling it.

I personally do not like using collars like that for day to day use when you aren't home. The pull part could snag on something. Now how that collar operates in relation to a true martingale, I'm not sure. A regular martingale pulls the actual collar tighter and could potentially strangle a snagged panicking dog.

for everyday use I would just use a flat collar. martingales and choke chains can be dangerous if they get caught on anything. I don't leave collars on my dogs while they're on my property, if I know someone is coming over than I put their collars on with no tags. off my property they wear collars and tags.

It doesn't make the collar any tighter when you pull. But I can definitely see how they could get it caught on something and choke if they kept trying to pull away. So yeah, I think we'll get rid of it. lol. I planned on buying a martingale for walks so he can't back out. We own an easy walk harness but if he walks well on a leash already then I don't plan on using it. He'll be in a crate if we aren't home (but thats usually on Sunday mornings for church lol) but yeah, I'll just get rid of this contraption and get a regular collar. I was looking into the Lupine brand? Their regular collar, is that a good one?

Yea, I use to forget to remove the choker from Meika's neck until a scary event. I have external knobs on my kitchen cabinets, she got snagged on the cabinet and began thrashing around. Luckily, I was right there and sadly the cabinet didn't make it, she ripped it right of the hinges lol but thank goodness she didn't strangle.
I use a rolled leather collar on 2 dogs, but the others usually go naked until we walk.

It's not really a bad contraption, I just wouldn't leave it on while you aren't home to supervise. It might be kind of nice for training actually to leave it on while you are home. IE: dog runs to the door and wants to crowd it, and/or jumps on people, it allows you a little more control to work on the dogs sit/stay without having to leave a tether tied to the dog all the time.

Okay, so I'll keep it for now and see if we may could use it after the dog is home. lol.

I was thinking about these collars? The top 2 (the 1" adjustable and the 1" combo collar). Really dumb reason but my son is totally in love with the spider. haha.

I have the bamboo collar and they are nice for off leash hikes because its easy to grab the handle for quick control, but when you don't need it nothing is dangling from their collar. That said I never leave anything but a well fitted flat collar on an unattended dog (my dogs don't wear collars in the house anyway).
As for lupine- I love them! I've never had one break, wear out, unsnap accidentally, etc. I've taken advantage of their lifetime guarantee (leash eating puppy) several times now.

Lupine collars are excellent. I have used them for years and yes, their regular collars are fantastic. Are you buying one because of the lifetime warranty?? or the patterns?? I have a lupine harness and several leashes. Their replacement warranty is phenomal.
