Long Leads

Is there something I am missing when using a long lead? It gets tangled up around her legs, around objects, her neck etc. constantly. Also, when using it to recall she runs back faster than I can reel it in, so if I need to correct her I cannot because the line is too slack. When tossing something for her to chase she runs faster than I can let the line out. If I just let her pull it out, it gets tangled up with itself or her legs or some other object.

Any advice is appreciated as I am finding a long lead to cause more problems than it is worth.
