Not sure if there are others but I know there are those who do not like/use them.
What Jean said. Plus the shock to the dog is worse coming back in than going out - and even that isn't enough to deter all of them. Not something I would consider, I'd build a kennel run first. What is your neighbor going to think about an (apparently) unrestrained dog? Or if he gets out?

My most recent post is about training Jake because the fence is in. That's where I need help on getting Jake to understand the beeps.

Susan as I stated earlier I really have no choice and I am not allowed to build anything. This containment is purely for when we are outside with him, he is never left alone so a kennel wouldn't be needed anyway.

We've had the invisible fence for 5 years and have trained 7 dogs on the e-fence, I will soon be training Hawkeye. The way I train them is on leash walk along the the flags, at every 3 or 4 flag walk through the flags as you hear the beep, rush out of the flag and say "get back" and give a treat. What you're teaching him is - he hears a beep, he gets back (to you), he gets a treat. If you can do this a few times per day. Within 2 maybe 3 days, as soon as he hears the beep, he will get back on his own, you won't even have time to say get back. On the fourth day take a ball roll it through the flags to see if he'll go for it or if he gets back when he hears the beep. By the time I've done this for 3 or 4 days I have a hard time to get them to even get to the beep, it's even harder to get them to get the shock because they know the beep means get back. When it comes time for the shock training, you'll probably need someone to pass your property and call the dog to them(not a member of your family), when he goes to meet that person he'll get a shock, make sure to tell him get back. The problem I've heard people have is that the dog is not trained where to go, so he doesn't know that he should get back in the yard and that's when they run through the e-fence, you're goal is to never let him know that there is no shock on the other side of the e-fence, he needs to think the only safe place is back in the yard. Hope this all makes sence. I had a very good trainer/installer. Good luck with the training, the training part is a pain for you, but it is so worth it. I can go outside and work in my garden and not have to worry about where they are, because I know they will not pass the barrier. My guys don't even go close enough to the line to hear the beep anymore and if they do get a little close I still tell them "be careful - get back". I absolutely love the e-fence.

Just a thought, would it not be easier to train with a remote trainer first so he gets used to what shocking means?
Our lab is trained to use an ecollar and she knows that when I say "hey" if she doesn't start coming back to me, there's about to be a correction. If we had an efence (or a yard for that matter ), I'd just yell "hey" when she's getting close to the fence line.

That is tough - I can build pretty much what I want as long as it isn't over 6' - if I want to go taller, I can apply for a permit. Good luck then, I hope this works for you.
