After my car accident today, I want to invest in those dog seatbelts. We were all ok, and I always keep leashes on the dogs in the car, but had I been hurt and not able to grab their leashes I'm afraid of what could have happened. Crates are not an option, they don't fit in my car and buying a vehicle for the dogs is not going to happen either. I've seen a few dogs come into the vet office for car accidents, the ones that were crated had far more injuries than the ones who weren't. Stabbed by metal wires or plastic crates shattered like an explosion.
Any suggestion on dog seatbelts for German Shepherds? |

Sorry about your accident, and glad you're okay. I can't remember where we got the seatbelt itself, but here's what our fragile little Rosa wears in the car.

This site tells you the features that you need to look for in a dog belt. They are NOT all really going to help in an accident or be comfortable for your dog:

I've used the Champion seatbelts for all my dogs for about the last 8-10 years or so, and they work great. They are made strong to hold up in an accident, unlike a lot of the dog "seatbelts" you can get at pet stores. If a seatbelt relies only on plastic clips to hold the dog in the harness, it will likely not be strong enough to hold up in an accident. Only a few seatbelts for dogs are strength rated and/or safety tested. Last edited by Chicagocanine; 08-19-2010 at 03:57 PM. |

I have the PetBuckle travel kit for Zelda and have to order a new one for Aleks now. It's worked great with her and was the only one I could find at Petsmart that had been crash-tested. Now I have to order it as they don't carry it anymore.
She feels secure wearing it and we haven't had any issues once she got used to wearing it. At first she could back out of it/it would slide around, but we figured out where she was most comfortable and adjusted the straps correctly and she's fine now.

I picked up the Kurgo Auto Zip Line a while back but I haven't used it yet. It's designed to allow your dog to walk around the rear while being restrained.
But I must admit, the links that MaggieRoseLee posted certainly have my attention... |
