What type of long line do you guys use? Nylon? Rope? Something else? Is there anything in particular to look for?

I have a lot of different lengths of long lines. A lot will depend on how you plan to use the line. For tracking I like this one: http://www.activedogs.com/product113.html
For just general training a clothes line with a clasp attached will work fine.

I prefer a cotton long line...yes they will rot when they get wet if you don't maintain them, but they're much easier on my hands than nylon. I get mine from Tractor Supply for $15.

I tried a regular clothesline rope, made it 50 feet long, but my female managed to snap it when she took off to try to chase another animal. I may have made it too long, and I did make knots in it at different places but that didnt help at all. Once she got to the end and the rope got tight it just snapped and she was then able to take chase didnt matter if I stepped on the rope to try to stop her.
Ive used the cotton web long leashes also but I didnt have the control that I need with my girl. A few months ago I went to the local tack shop and bought a 25 foot horse lunge line. It is flat with a rubber knob at the end you hold and where the clasp is to attach it to the collar it has a piece of material sewn onto it. This works best for me and my girl. I have a better grip and can hold her better and she cant snap it. I figured if it can hold a horse it can hold my dog. It was only 19.99. I thought that was a good price. I can take a picture of it if you would like to see it.

I use tubular line, the same used in mountain gear with a snap in one end. Soft as cotton but with the advantages of nylon. And unless chewed, it will never cut on its own.
