I've had the 'Invisible Fence' for years (have installed it in two - soon to be three - properties and had six different dogs - 4GSDs - trained to it. I even had a cat trained to it!
My dogs have never needed more than one or two 'encounters' with the shock of the fence. They learned to head the warning beep and stay clear even when provoked by neighbors walking dogs by/ I agree that is shouldn't be relied on when you're not at home, more because it doesn't keep other animals out than my worry that a dog would wander.

As I've said before, we had Invisible Fence for our stubborn and very smart Dal and we just recently had to train Anna on it. She discovered the joy of jumping the chainlink to go after dead squirrel carcasses and other joys in the drainage ditch when mommy and daddy weren't looking. Ugh.
Anyway, after three days of training, she's doing great. We removed the flags and she knows the boundries, even while running around like a mad woman when playing with Duncan. Like I've said, if trained properly the system can work. Would I leave her unattended in the front yard with no actual fence and only the Invisible Fence? Heck no. Do I enjoy the confidence of letting her out in the backyard in the morning to potty while I make my coffee/get moving knowing she won't hop the chainlink fence? Absolutely!

I currently have the Deluxe Radio fence for my 3 "fenced" in acres. Like others before have said I only use the fence for supervised outside time.
If a dog WANTS to go through the fence, it will, even with the "stubborn dog" collar. I have a dog that has little prey drive (actual prey, not balls) and respects boundries. Phoenix has actually watched a rabbit run across the backyard w/o even moving. When he saw the deer in the backyard, he actually ran to get his blue pool and drag it closer to the house...guess he was afraid they wanted to play with it. My family has been using the Radio fence on all of our properties for the past 16 years w/ very few problems. My brother's first dog, a siberian husky, was sneaky enough to wear down the battery w/ the warning signal so she could escape and go swimming in his neighbor's pond. My brother had to turn off the warning signal from the transmitter.
