So, Anna has learned to back out of her very fashionable flat collar....because she's being a teenage butthead right now.
![]() Anyway, would you suggest a martingale? Is there anything I should look for? Should it fit like a normal collar or does it need to be high on the head like a prong? Any tips, suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

I had to put a nylon choker type collar on Lexi(non GSD) because no matter how I had her buckle collar she would weasel her way out of it.I only have choker kinds on Athena.I think any collar needs to be high to work correctly.I may be wrong though.

Martingales are comfortable for the dog, won't choke/overcorrect, and are great for security (dog cannot slip). They're not so great for training, meaning they are not a self-correcting collar like a prong can be and not intended for giving corrections. Basically to me they are no different than a flat collar the dog cannot slip. When I get a new dog I use a martingale until I know if the dog has any fears or "issues". The fit doesn't really matter, as long as the dog can't slip it when it's tightened all the way.

I'm not looking to give corrections, like with a prong, I just don't want her to back out of her flat collar when she decides to be a butt...which she's doing lately on walks...I hate this age.

Then the martingale is perfect for that.
I order mine from this site: http://www.fidosfashioncollars.com/ I prefer the loop martingale b/c I like the look with less hardware (but can be a pain to constantly adjust putting on and off) She also makes ones with buckles and/or chains

Cool! thank you! I think I'll do the loop/buckle just for ease.

I like the ones with the chain only because a lot of times when the dog heard the chain tightening up the already stop pulling, not all dogs but some.
DeeDee was a callar slipper, I chould have a rolled leather collar on her so tight, but she could still be her head popped out of it. The Martingale was the cure for that. Val |

I have Martingales on all my dogs and have felt much more secure ever since. Regarding fit the kind I buy do not have the chain, I have found the chain to be heavier causing the loop section to hang down creating a dangerous, catchable loop (on posts, branches, etc)
Also in this regard don't hang dog tags on the loop ring as it will cause both collar styles to drag and create the loop. FYI

This collar would only be used for walks/going places, etc.
I guess since she can't get it off, there's no real need for a tag, or what do you guys use for ID on these type collars?
