Default Safest Harness

I am looking at different harnesses for puppies/dogs.

I use martingales on all my dogs so they can't back out of them/get away.

Lupine doesn't make tiny martingales.

I can get tiny martingales at Petsmart I believe. I am not sure if that's good for a tiny puppy or not-using a martingale. I am at a whole new level of worry I guess, since I used to be okay with a buckle collar.

Lupine does make harnesses in three varieties.

There is the Step In (Rocco has one like this one):

Roman (Rosa has one of these types):

The H (kind of for cats):

I have seen cats wriggle out of harnesses quite easily. I haven't used harnesses on a lot of dogs, and the ones I did use them on were very compliant dogs. I want the next harness or collar I get the puppies to be extremely safe as they will be able to leave the yard soon!

I have done double with Anna in the past-a harness and martingale collar and two leashes (in my defense she did bite through a lot of leashes) so I am not afraid to look like a total neurotic. I am just looking for the safest thing to use for now.

Thanks!

Not sure exactly what you mean by "safest" (strongest? most comfortable? can't back out?) but for an all purpose harness for dogs I use the Ruffwear. When fitted correctly, a dog would have to be a contortionist to back out of that one!

For my cat I have a figure 8 harness. Not sure if he can get out of it, he's never tried (he just likes to lie in the grass).

Can't back out of is my primary thing.

I love the Ruffwear. I guess I would be looking at an XXS, but that is really big $$$ for a harness they will outgrow...quickly!

When Nikon was a pup I used a basic nylon harness from Petsmart for about $10. Since he was so small, not strong, and didn't have any sort of "issues", we just went with that one. Actually he wore Tracy's Siren's old harness until he outgrew that then I bought the same thing a size bigger. Now he fits into the Ruffwear or has his own leather bitework harness.

I have the Ruff Wear Webmaster for my Cairn Scooter when we go hiking. He has backed out of every harness except this one. It is great! Waterproof and has a handle so i can pick up if i need to when hiking. I got it because I also wanted to be sure that when hiking if emergency I could pick him up by it and he wouldn't fall out, if hanging off a rock or anything (probably would never happen but you never know) I actually picked him up by it several ways to be sure it was secure.
Scooter weighs about 17lbs and it fits him well with lots of room to grow.
I got it here, much cheaper than full price. Sizes available always vary for the open box deals.

Best picture I could find of him in it.

Um, these are for foster puppies, right Jean? And they're tiny but growing like crazy?

If the harnesses they have right now are working then I would stick with those. I don't think those pups are going to be making a mad dash for the border anytime soon. They look pretty happy with you.

I would stick with the harnesses from Petsmart (or wherever) the 5 point adjustable - which is what I think you're using now.

Oh, I didn't realize these were little foster puppies, just get a regular 5 point harness and make sure they are snug. Do not waste your money on the Ruff Wear harness unless you will always have a use for them. It is a great harness but a lot of you are not going to always have a use for it.

I don't know if this would be better, but there's also the Sense-ation harness, which fits completely differently than the harness you use. The Sense-ible harness is rather affordably priced.
