I think a lot depends on the dog. It is advertised as removing the undercoat, and in a stock coat shepherd, that where you get a lot of shedding.
We were using one for our long coat and stopped as I did not like what it was doing to her hair. It was working like a thinning shear a barber might use on a thick head of hair that you wanted to lighten up, say for the summer. I now use professional grooming combs, but I know folks who use the furminator quite happily and regularly.

i brush my stock coats once a week and i take off what looks to be a wigs worth of hair by the time i'm done. It cuts down on her shedding so much. That furminator is one of the best things i've ever bought.

I too think of the furminator as the best grooming tool around. I have 5 dogs with 5 different coat types and the only other tool I use is a comb. It makes short work of the shedding problem for all.

My fiancee has just bought one in anticipation of our first GSD. We figured that our cat, McLovin, who has a nice coat she likes to yak up once a year for weeks on end, would benefit from it.
The results are amazing and the cat likes it. My fiancee told me that she removes a small handful every morning and the cat's fur looks great. She also "tested" it on her mom's new lab and removed handfuls of fur. "We" are firmly convinced!

I noticed with my Golden Retriever if I used the Furminator too much on her 'furnishings' (the longer fur on her hips/legs) it would end up cutting the fur and taking out too much. However it worked ok if I used it on her back.
I also sometimes use them on my older cat who sheds a lot. It doesn't seem to work well on my younger cats though. I have a black Maine Coon also but I am afraid of using it too much on her because I don't want to end up cutting or messing up her beautiful coat. I've tried using it on Bianca but I end up with cramping hands before I get out all of the loose fur! I am thinking of going to a groomer and having them do the "Furminator Treatment" to see if that gets more of the loose coat out. |

I just bought the Furminator and use it on my long coat about once a week. It doesn't seem to cause too much thinning and makes keeping house with two GSD's much easier. I still get plenty of hairballs/fuzzy fur floating around the house, but not as bad as before the Furminator. Worth the money IMO and a time saver too. With a normal brush and rake it would take at least twice as long to achieve the same results.

I'm looking at picking up a furminator. Which size do you guys use? The med 2.65" or the large 4" one? Also anyone tried the one with fur ejector? For med size, it is about $4 more, is it worth the $$?
