Not sure if this is where I would post...
Have been observing for a while and have a question. I am about to get a new SLR digital camera and am down to the Nikon D40 and the Canon RebelXS. I have had a Canon Rebel in the past (35mm) but I can see there are many people on here that take amazing pictures and I was wondering if any one had any opinions to help me make my decision. Thanks in advance! |

I think that the equipment section is more for dog type equipment - leashes, collars, harnesses, ect; this would probably be better answered in one of the Chat rooms and might possibly be moved there by a moderator.
But to try to answer your question: They are both excellent cameras. If you already have experience with Canon, and any canon lenses, then you might want to stick with Canon. Your 35mm lenses probably will not work with the new DSLR because of all the computerization involved communicating between the shutter/aperture/and lens. I have heard of some people having success with the old lenses on the new camera's but I wonder what is the point other than to do it. The new lenses are so fine! Nikon supposedly has the edge on lenses, Canon has the edge on speed, but you would have to be a professional to really see the differences. I shoot with a Nikon D80 and love it, but I think Cassidy's mom shoots with a Canon...I'm not sure what Camera Fodder shoots with other than whatever she can get her hands on. I would have both if I could afford them Welcome!

I have a Nikon D50, I really think a lot just comes down to personal preference.
When I went camera shopping it was between Nikon and Cannon, Nikon won because I preferred the feeling in my hands ![]() My 35mm is Minolta XG7 (oldie but goodie)

I have always been a Canon person. My flash and lens worked fine on my Canon 20D and will work on my Canon Rebel xti. Unless you have an higher end camera (Like a Mark III) the sensor will magnify your lens 1.6%. So my zoom lens that is 70 - 300 is actually 112 - 480 used with a digital! Great getting that extra reach. The downside is your wide angles aren't as wide.
I think I heard years ago that Canon had the better lens than Nikon, but that was from another Canon user who had a friend that worked the newspaper in San Francisco who told him they were swtching from Nikon to Canon for that reason. I don't know if that's really true. They are both good cameras, but if you already have some usable Canon equipment, I would stick with Canon. The kit lens really isn't all that good, but you can't beat it to get you started. And to be honest, I haven't held or tried a Nikon camera so I don't want to knock them.

We do all have our favorites
All of us kids got 35mm cameras for highschool graduation, and some how they all ended up from differen companies! Cannon, Nikon, Pentax and then my Minolta. I think only the Pentax is no longer working - I of course still have my Minolta. I was originally going to get a Minolta Digital SLR so I could use the lens etc but then Minolta went out of the camera side so it was between the Cannon and the Nikon.

Don't think you will go wrong with either.
The Nikon D40 is a great little camera. I bought one for my husband (I have a D80). I will be buying another D40 for my daughters graudation gift. I beleive they have stopped making it so it is older technology, but still a great camera. As far as lenses goes, both Nikon and Canon have their "great" lenses, and their ok lenses. I picked Nikon over Canon because I liked the way it felt in my hand. |

Both are fine cameras, top brands. It will depend on personal preference. I, and many others, prefer the *feel* of the Nikon. Since I did not have any equipment before buying my D90, I didn't have to worry about compatibility with older lenses so I use all Nikon.
