My pup got sick on me and spent 7 days in the vet getting IV treatment, he got full blown parvo.
We brought him home on Wednesday; since we brought him home I've noticed a few changes... He lost prob 20 pounds.. he looks superskinny fur and bones... His ears aren't standing up any more.. Should I tape them??? Also I noticed he's shedding alot! I brushed him yesterday and got a furball the size of a grapefruit. I also had to sweep cause the house was full if hair. I know it was fresh hair because I swept and moped before we brought him home on Wednesday.. The Vet prescribed him a diet of chicken and rice for the next two weeks..Should I be giving him some kinda calcium?? could that be causing the ear and shedding problem? |

From what I understand, when dogs get sick, one of the first thing to suffer is the coat. He lost a LOT of weight in a very short time. I bet his body is sill kinda reeling from the extreme assault. Perhaps it's easier to blow a coat and grow out a new one?
Maybe his body is working harder on healing the internal damage and not dealing w/ the extras now, coat and ears. Maybe I'm wrong, but I know from watching TV and our own rescue, when dogs get very thin, their coat a lot of time suffers because the lack of proper food/diet and nutrients.

How old is Luke? Isn't he an adult?
I would think that being sick, especially that sick, took alot out of his body. I wouldn't worry about his coat. It will grow back. Not sure on his ears. I would assume they will go back up once his nutrients are back in his body. |

I wouldn't add any additional suppliments to his system until it begins to right itself, unless told to do so by the vet. You want to be as easy on it as you can.
Don't be concerned about his weight loss. He gain it back in time. I wouldn't be concerned about his ears either. In fact, I bet when he gets to feeling better they'll come back up. You can use them to gauge how he feels. Parvo takes a great toll on the body and causes a significant amount of stress. Don't be too worried about him blowing his coat. Give him a big hug and kiss for me! |
