Question She's 18 mos old and her ears are still flopping...

Will they stand erect on their own or will they always be floppy? Any suggestions, ideas, nutrional changes, etc., would be greatly appreciated...my vet said it has a good deal to do with the fact that she was in 2 shelters at 2 different periods of her young life, 2 homes, 4 foster homes, and now my home. Vet said she needs to feel secure, comfortable and safe. Does the vet's advise seem realistic and sound? HELP, she's a beauty; but those ears flop every which way, sometimes, not all the time. Thanks in advance - Connie

It is true that her early life could have had an impact on those ears, but at 18 months, they're pretty much the way they are

The breeder that i bought my german shepherd form has two GSD's, one is my dogs mom and one is his grandma. The grandma dogs ears stand straight up BUT the mama dog's so not only because they grandma dog is the "Alpha" and she is second. So with your dogs past, she may not have established a sense of security or does not feel "strong" do you know what i mean? do you have any other animals?

Everything I read says they'll always be floppy if they are floppy at that age and I've read just about everything because my pup (8+ months) has a left ear that refuses to go up despite almost 4 months of intervention.

A dog's mental state has nothing to do with it's ears. Some dogs have soft ears, some have erect.

At 18 months her ears will stay that way...

I am thinking at 18 months the ears are probably what they are going to be. If that is the case and erect ears matter to the owner then surgical intervention is all I know to correct it.

To all the wonderful owners who took the time to reply to my question about floppy ears, thanks so much. I do have a male gsd at home as well, he's 3, but a sweet, sweet boy who is not trying to be alpha; actually the new female is more dominant, so here's to my finding out more about the tape thing.....Thanks again everyone; I'm new to this site, but find it a valuable tool already.
