I just read on the dogfood project that Canidae is changing their formula and will not be gluten free anymore.

I don't get it, I don't see gluten in the new formulas?

Thanks Betsy. I'm looking at foods for my new pup and Canidae WAS a finalist.
I really hate barley. Millet too. (Those are two of my GSD's worst allergies. I can't have that stuff anywhere near my house.) I just sent them an email to let them know they've lost a customer, and that I've always recommended Canidae highly (I fed it to Camper for a long time). No more. |

We found out about the formula changes from the local distributor a couple weeks ago. We've fed this food for years and been very happy with it. No plans to change foods at this time since I still feel it's one of the best foods on the market for the price, and I appreciate Canidae being upfront and letting people know there are impending changes to the formulas before doing it. Will have to see how our dogs do on the food after the formula changes. None of ours have any allergies, so hopefully they still do well.

At least they're letting people know in advance. The last 2 times I fed canidae they changed it and denied changing it even though I had proof of them doing it. So at least this is an improvement in that aspect.

I heard about this a couple of weeks ago, almost posted, but since I heard it from my friend I chose not to since it would be 2nd hand info.
I think we'll see more foods going to Barley with the increase in the price of Rice. Of course, the addition of Barley means that I now have one more food I can't feed to Dante.

i just dumped a new bag of ALS into my dogs food bin yesterday and noticed the kibble is smaller and darker than before. it crossed my mind "hm, i wonder if somethings changed" then ironically i came inside to this thread....
so my question - has the change already occurred or am i seeing things? i'm with chris, i also plan to stick with canidae (for tilden) until (if) he develops a problem on it.

This was the response I got to my email:
http://www.canidae.com/new-formulas.html That's it. No "Thanks for writing. We'll let marketing/research know your concerns." No "We'll keep your comments in our files for future reference." Nothing. I've always received personal responses from Canidae til this time. Just a link? That's it? Either they're getting a lot of mail, or they're less interested in customer feedback then they used to be. Kind of disappointing. Grain-free foods aren't for every dog. Canidae has always filled a great niche in the market. To me, it makes sense to raise the cost of a bag of food a dollar or two than add ingredients that makes it more like all the other stuff. Millet (a major food source in Africa)and barley are also in short supply internationally. It's not just rice, so I'm not sure I buy the "save the rice for poor people" statement. Oh well. Back to researching and reading ingredients labels... |
