I just got a bag of Sojos. I imagine you don't have to add meat? I made it and froze it to use as a treat. For the first time ever Apollo found the bowl of the stuff and ate half of it. There was raw turkey right there but he went for this mix and really seemed to like it.
Wysong offers one. They don't recommend feeding it exclusively though -- they recommend using it as part of an elimination diet, and adding meat to it: Holistic Cat / Dog Food ? Wysong Veganâ„¢
(I like the Honest Kitchen's Preference base-mix better for elimination diets that add novel proteins, though.)
(I know no one who's fed this as a sole diet over the long term though, so I can't comment on the condition of dogs who eat this exclusively. The veg*ns I know all feed their dogs and cats animal protein -- often fish-based kibbles. I've been vegetarian, and sometimes vegan, in my own diet for over two decades, and I would be very uncomfortable feeding veg kibble to a dog unless it were due to a specific health issue under vet supervision.)
Thanks everyone. This is a good starting off point for me.
I'm not vegan. Neither are my dogs. I eat paleo. They eat raw.
This is for an exotic omnivore species who's diet should consist primarily of grains - african soft fur rats. I'm not pleased with the commercial rodent diets , and many keepers suggest using cheap (primarily grain) dog food as an alternative.
As my other pets will be eating said critters, I want them on a high quality diet free of questionable ingredients. Not keen on pumping them full of BHA, Menadione, BHT, and ethoxyquin.
I asked here because I trust the judgement of the posters here when it comes to which dog food companies are reliable.
That said the kibble isn't even the primary diet for the small furries. Just a base I add fresh fruits, vegetables, seeds, insects and meat to.
:grin2: Glad to hear it is for your small critters. I feed Natural Balance Vegetarian to my pet mice in combination with a grain mix and Harlan Teklad 18 and some veggies and seed-loaded grasses. Haven't seen cancer/tumors in them for many years.
I prepare "Sojos Grain Free" to my Shepherd (I've fed this to my dogs for years). I boil either chicken breasts or chicken thighs, use the broth to rehydrated the Sojos, mix in chunks of the meat with the Sojos and he loves it. He is healthy, gets all his nutrients and his coat is absolutely silky gorgeous.
A few nights a week we were doing the honest kitchen grain free base mix kindly and preference mixed with raw. He was eating it but always seemed to enjoy the meat more. Now Max won't touch the kindly or preference base mix at all, he will just pick out the meat. I even tried soaking it with HK bone broth it was a no go. Not sure it's because of the summer heat he has been not ferociously hungry or he just got more picky. I guess he just had enough of it. I had picked up a small box of the honest kitchen embark Turkey grainfree- he seems to like it but not sure if it will be indefinately. Was wondering if he would like another brand base mix or not.
If you decide to feed NB, I would sign up for their "Club NB" emails. Back when I fed that brand, they sent me $5 email coupons pretty regularly -- which could be combined with sales at big box stores. They also keep your email for immediate notice of recalls.
Hey voodoolamb, this is about the little rodents and for anyone else who has them. Like I said, I have pet mice and I keep them on natural forest soil in a 20 gal tank. A layer of 4 inch soil, branches, gras sods and they go to work; digging tunnels etc. It is hilarious (if you enjoy these critters). And the best thing is that they don't smell and you don't have to change them for months as the soil absorbs the waste and odors. But you have to keep it a little damp and 'diggable'.
