Default How to aid weight gain?(non-GSD)

We have a foster Chihuahua right now....he is around 3 years....his ears are fly bitten, all healed up, and lots missing. We think he must of been an outside dog. He is skinny....he needs to gain weight. He is resting a lot, sleeps most of the day and night....he gets spunky though during potty breaks. He doesn't like Abby so he is staying in an ex-pen most of the time. Luckily he seems to be housebroken.

I am looking for ways to put weight on him....I am feeding him three times a day, 3oz wet and 1/4 cup dry....he doesn't eat all the dry but he eats most of it. I add a little water also since he doesn't drink much.

He goes into the shelter for adoption on May 3.

Whenever I need to feed for weight gain, I've always mixed in to dry kibble or given on its own a fatty type of meat such as lamb mince.

Vice versa when feeding for weight reduction, I give leaner meats like kangaroo

Try Nutrical - comes in a tube - high calorie, vitamin rich - your little one can lick it right off of your finger. It really helped my Raven gain her weight back after oral cancer surgery.

I have had very good luck with a product called Missing Link. It has numerous vitamans and minerals and does put on the weight. You will also get weight gain using extra virgin unprocessed coconut oil. That has the added benefits as well.

How long have you had him? If it's only a short time, it may be that with your current feeding, he will eventually gain weight. I wouldn't want him to have a jump in weight, personally, but a gradual one. Since Chihuahuas can be prone to obesity and it doesn't sound like he's THAT active at the moment, he won't need that many extra calories really to gain.
