another underweight puppy thread :)
I am having trouble keeping weight on my 8 month old Ivan. He had a vet visit about this, he doesn't have parasites and the vet said he was healthy. I'm not sure if it is just that he's going through a growth spurt or what. He's very high energy and very intense. Extremely active.

He does have food allergies, chicken. He is currently on 4health beef and potatoes, but he's up to 7 cups a day and he's just maintaining. You can see his ribs. My 1 yr old Dude is on 5 cups a day and his weight is fine. (different energy levels) I guess my question would be if an athelete/sport formula might work to help pick him up a bit?

I suggest you try Solid Gold Barking At the Moon. It is a high protein grain free no chicken no corn and low carb. And he wouldn't need 7 cups/day. My Sting loves it and is a big guy 130 lbs. - he only gets 4.5 cups/day .

At 7 cups a day, I would certainly agree it might just be time to try something else.

Seeing the ribs a little bit is fine, this is common for most adolescent GSDs and nothing to worry about. Seeing the ribs prominently/hip bones prominently, however, is not ideal. If that's what's going on, I would switch to a higher calorie, higher fat food.

Nulo Endurance is what I used to help put a little weight on my youngest, and I was generally pleased with the results. Its a 20% fat/466 kcals/cup food, plus very good quality and completely chicken/egg free.

If I were you, I would look for foods that are closer to 20% fat, with at least 400 kcals/cup. If you can't find else can't afford a dry food like this, consider supplementing with things like beef trim, dark meat chicken like thighs/leg meat (with skin), pork shoulder/fat, etc.

Has he been tested for EPI?

Can you add some canned green tripe? Eggs?

I agree on a higher calorie kibble as well.

What about trying Wellness Core Ocean formula, it has 417 kcal per cup and it does not contain chicken?

My male was on TOTW and Acana and I had the same problem with him needing 6-7 cups a day! The food bill was ridiculous.

His breeder raises their dogs on Red Paw, so I decided to try that. He is now a healthy, fit 2 year old dog, who maintains his weight on about 3 - 3 1/2 cups a day. During the summer I feed the 32K and during the winter I feed the 38K. So summer they get around 2000 calories/day from the kibble, and then a raw meal in the morning. Winter they get around 2500 calories/day from kibble plus their raw meal in the morning.

You can check it out here:

They do however contain chicken, so if that has been shown (through elimination diet) to be the problem, then this food may not work.

The X-Series is grain free, poweredge is not.

I'll look into this is well... Ward is energetic and happy but his ribs are very visible. Vet said he could put on a few lbs but isn't unhealthy... He gets about 4 cups of food a day... Increasing the amount gives him diarrhea so I higher calorie food might be a good idea

Thanks for all the replies folks! Looks like I'm gonna be doing some research tonight to find me a new dogfood :). I'm also going to start supplementing his meals with some raw venison, my SO is an avid hunter and has been very successful this year. Didn't know he has been putting some back for my dogs! He's a sweetie!

I'll get some pictures this weekend to better show where Ivan is now with his weight, it's impossible to do without help. Hopefully in a couple of weeks I will see some improvement.

Just an update. It's been about a week and I notice a definite improvement. I couldn't find a higher calorie food local that didn't have chicken (chicken allergy) so what we are doing is he gets a scrambled egg with 2 of his meals and at his evening meal he gets a piece of raw venison as well.

We are on our way to town now and I planned to stop at the vet's to get his weight checked.

Thanks for all the suggestions!
