joint supplement for 5 month old puppy

Hi I have a five month old gsd named sasha. We have been doing puppy classes and at our last class the trainer mentioned putting her on joint supplements starting now since she is going to be a large dog. Is this something I should do and if so what are some good supplements to try

How does your trainer know she's going to be a big dog? I hope he/she didn't say by the size of her paws lol.

If the dog is bred right and isn't overweight, I'm not sure why additional joint supps are needed.

For what it's worth, I have a close friend who is a scientist and works in R&D...there have been studies done on joint care for humans which show that there isn't a direct link between taking glucosamine/chondroitin and it doing anything for the joint itself. In reality, a healthy diet will trump any "supplements" someone can take, human or animal.

she didn't say that she was going to be big just that german shepherds are large dogs. That's really good to know that there is no link between joint supps and actual joint health

If you decide to use one, we use Mussel Dog.
Mussel Dog, which is sourced from Plankton (from New Zealand), contains natural occurring glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) and chondroitin sulfate. It also contains complex proteins, amino acids (glutamine and methionine), vitamins C and E, and naturally chelated minerals, especially zinc, copper and manganese. Chondroitin and glucosamine are both components of natural cartilage and are used within the body to build cartilage. The Chondroitin is known to block enzymes that break down cartilage, helping to protect joints from inflammatory disease. Green lipped mussel works long-term to protect the structural integrity of joints and connective tissue. Is also eases pain and inflammation for dogs (or people) with chronic joint problems. Green Lipid Mussel, unlike other Glucosamine (derived from shell-fish shells) and Chondroitin (generally derived from cow cartilage) products, is easier for the body to assimilate.

For puppies/dogs, I would highly recommend Mussel Dog. You start out with a "loading dose for a few weeks and then the dosage per day drops: https://www.musseldoghealth.com/Index.dtm they are VERY helpful when you call!
*Mussel Dog® is the world's only patented Green-Lipped Mussel oil extract naturally formulated to help maintain a beautiful coat, clear skin, manageable allergies and joint mobility throughout the life of your dog.
*Mussel Dog® is naturally formulated, produced using a patented process under strict quality control standards for your dog's safety.
*Mussel Dog® works safely and effectively with no negative side effects.
*Mussel Dog® promotes great health while reducing inflammation associated with allergies and skin irritation.
The typical K9 diet tends to contain at least 11 times more omega-6s than omega-3s and many researchers believe this imbalance is a significant factor in the rising rate of inflammatory disorders in the dog population in the United States. Mussel Dog's potent formula helps to balance these levels. These omega-3 acids include DHA (docosahexaenoic acid), EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid), ETA (eicosatetraenoic acid) and 27 other essential fatty acids. A potent combination found nowhere else in nature.
Should my puppy take Mussel Dog®?
Absolutely! The best way to prevent health problems and conditions from developing is to be proactive and get your dog on a healthy program of diet, exercise and nutrition. Mussel Dog® can play an integral role in keeping your dog at peak health!

I think joint supplements is a good thing for a GSD.

Yes, green lipped muscle products are excellent, there has been some very favorable research done on this natural product. I used to use a canine product called Glyde GLYDE® FOR DOGS as it contains Glucosamine, Chondroitin and Green Lipped Mussel, however I found it expensive so I just use a human glucosamine & chondroitin capsule, but I may go back to Glyde if I feel my GSD with HD needs it.

You can also buy dried green lipped muscles as a treat Green Lipped Mussel | your online pet shop

Fair enough – however, I’d also say then that naturally the dog would have the correct bone/joint structure to support itself. Size doesn’t have anything to do with joint issues…it’s when the dog is too heavy for it’s intended frame that there will be joint issues (or genetics). By your trainer’s statement, we should quickly start feeding all elephants in the world joint supplements!
