help. GSD underweight?
first post, first off thanks for any help.
i adopted a 3 month old GSD, there was a breeder here that the humane society shut down for mistreatment of the pups and parents.
he was fixed when i got him (3 months old, humane society policy).
he was born 14 Sept 2012, which makes him almost 13 months old now.
hes 26" tall at shoulders, weight of 62.5 pounds.
his diet consists of IAMS adult, i often supplement his diet with fresh fish oil, eggs, chicken, tuna and beef (eggs raw, chicken and beef cooked with nothing added).
hes not huge on ball or frisbee, but he is huge on the 2 acre fenced dog park we take him to, hes there almost every day for at least 30 minutes, he each visit he has been able to play and run around with at least 30 - 90 dogs at a time, various sizes various breeds. hes usually pretty tired by the end of it.
he goes for walks quite regularly (leashed),
hes also quite big on tug-o-war, he will play for hours with a rope usually taunting me with the rope to play and then proudly strutting around once he finally gets the rope.
i have attached a few photos of the past 2 months - present
what does everyone think? underweight?
How much are you feeding him...and how often?
(Hard to tell by photos)
i didnt expect the photos to turn out so small.
hes never seems to over eat, although thats not to say he under eats either, its pretty normal for him to leave food in his bowl and eat it later.
usually around 6 - 8 cups of iams adult chunks, this is based on what the bag says, its become apparent the bags measuring scale is probably significantly off due to breed specific caloric intake.
after getting him i did alot of research and contacted a few breeders, everything basically said for his first year to give him as much as he wants to aid growth and ensure he has enough calories to allow growth and reduce chances of growth fractures, as such it was not uncommon at times for him on a large exercise day while closing in on a year to consume upto 12 cups as well as large amounts of water.
Have you taken him to the vet?
I can't tell what he looks like from the photos...sorry.
Eating 6-8, up to 12, cups of food a day seems like a LOT of food, IMO.
i think you should take him to the Vet for a complete check up.
when you go to the Vet take a stool an urine sample. you may
want to switch to a better brand than Iams. the tuna you feed
is it fresh or canned? when i give my dog canned tuna it's in water,
no salt added. feeding 6 to 8 cups up to 12 cups is alot of food
but i guess it depends on the dog.
i got my pup when he was 9 weeks old. i fed him 1 cup in the am,
1 cup noonish and 1 cup in the pm. he had a snack and training
treats throughout the day. i think he was 9 months old when
i started feeding 1 cup in the am and 1 cup in the pm. he had
a snack occasionally but he always had his training treats.
you have nice looking dog. good luck with him.
Definitely get him checked out.
Great that you are adding REAL food!:D You can also add some raw meat when cooking it for your family!;)
Switch to a better kibble. Iam's uses By-products which includes intestines WITH fecal matter in them and their vitamans/minerals come from China!
Choose a better quality food, something like Fromm's, Nature's VARIETY (NOT Nature's Recipe), or Acana, usually only purchased from a doggie boutique type store. If you can't find it in your area, let me know.
agreed on the need to improve the food which is his basic diet.
If you are going to the vet have the stool examined for whip worm , and others .
You may want to add some digestive enzymes and probiotics to help the dog get benefit from the nutrition in the food.
Take him to the Vet to rule out any medical problems.
Iams is a low quality food if you switched to a better kibble then you wouldn't feed 6-8 cups, you'd feed around 4 cups. Not to mention that getting him on a better kibble will mean less poop, less shedding, a nicer more rich looking coat and a healthier pup.
Thanks for the replying everyone.
What do you guys think of blue buffalo, or wilderness brand
