Hi guys. I recently adopted a German Shepherd who is approximately three years old. He had been fed on Pedigree Dog Food while he was at the shelter, and no one really knows what he was fed before. Anyway, I've decided I want to feed him Skinners Field and Trail: Duck & Rice, and I was wondering if any of you could help me with what kind of portions (in cups or grams) I should be feeding him? The guidelines that the shelter gave me for Pedigree was two cups both in the morning and evening. Do I continue these same portions?
The reason that I wish to change is that the poor Dog does not have a very nice coat at all. I've given him his first bath in a long time, and his coat doesn't look great for long, even with regular brushing twice a day. He sheds a lot too, which I think could be lessened if he has a better coat (but I do realise a long coat German Shepherd will shed regardless). I've never owned a German Shepherd before, but I have had Dogs all my life and certainly did a lot of research before adopting him. His behaviour is generally good, he seems to be wary of strangers, but is definitely fearful aggressive to other Dogs, I don't think he was socialised. I'll try tackling that problem later, but for now it would be greatly appreciated if I could get this nutritional help from more experienced GSD owners. Thank you! |

I'd start by comparing kcals/cup of the old food vs. the new food. Assuming he was getting enough to maintain a lean physique and stay at a stable weight on 4 cups per day of the old food, figure how many kcals that equals, then figure out how many cups of the new food it takes to equal that amount of calories per day.
Good luck with the new GSD! |
